sometimes slow-moving but ultimately rewarding showcase for the dazzling young acting talents of Nicolas Cage with the Moon" "Cotton and Matthew Modine "Vision "Birdy" lasts for two hours but seems longer primarily because of a muzzy structure that wanders back and forth in time like smoke through a screen door We're in the present (entirely too much and too repetitiously) of a military psychiatric hospital the distant past of a depressed Philadelphia boyhood and the more recent past of the charnel houses of Vietnam The title character beautifully explored by Modine is a strange and fragile young man who has retreated all his life from a dreary Philly neighborhood an overbearing mother a defeated father sex and violence into the fantasy of flight He nearly manages the fantasy almost disguises his growing craziness until he's shot down over an Asian jungle After having been missing in action for a month Birdy is hospitalized in the states Trying to bring him out of a strangely mute and contorted state his psychiatrist (John Harkins) sends for Bir-dy's only boyhood buddy Sgt Al Columbato (Cage) Al has his own problems half his face has been blown away by an enemy shell and for a young man who thinks he has nothing going for him but his looks that's the end of the world Based on William Wharton's poetic novel evidently a campus favorite "Birdy" has been lovingly transplanted by screenwriters Sandy Kroopf and Jack Behr and Pnoio From Tn-Siar Pictures Matthew Modine plays title role in "Birdy" All The Queen's Horses ses can sometimes dovetail like puzzle pieces The bandaged Al speaks for a generation of veterans when he sobs "They got the best of us Birdy We haven't had anything to do with making our own lives" What's particularly gratifying about Cage's performance as the preening and pitiful Al is that it proves at long last that his delightful work in "Valley Girl" was no fluke director Alan Parker from 1940s to the '60s Parker for whose career "Bugsy Malone" "Midnight Express" "Fame" "Shoot the Moon" "Pink Floyd The Wall" the word checkered might have been invented has never feared to rush in where cameras might rightfully fear to tread Much of "Birdy" book and movie happens in poor Birdy's muddled mind and Parker makes an astonishing attempt at visualizing Birdy's flights of fancy Where "Birdy" really takes flight though is in the memory scenes of the long-ago friendship between the boys Bagging pigeons on the top of a natural gas plant pretending their parked and ancient jalopy is carrying them at top speed along the
