assurance Thursday that the state won't pull the financial rug from under them this spring For the most part they came away satisfied that state budget cuts affecting schools will be slight "I think they're leaving feeling pretty good" said Mecklenburg state Rep Jo Graham Foster chairman of the House Education Committee Earlier this year a legislative committee was formed to find ways to cut as much as 6 percent from the state's education budget But Mrs Foster told the Mecklenburg group the state's public schools will probably only lose about 3 percent of their proposed budget for each of the next two fiscal years One of the Raleigh visitors Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board member John McLaughlin seemed satisfied "We feel like we've been heard" he said With McLaughlin were fellow board members Betsy Bennett and Carrie Winter board Chairman Phil Berry Superintendent Jay Robinson and several Charlotte Mecklenburg PTA leaders They had traveled to Raleigh for a Public Education Day meeting of the new NC Alliance for Public Education Members of the alliance a coalition of organizations representing the state's school boards administrators PTAs and educational office workers spent most of the morning listening to speeches by elected officials at the Raleigh Civic Center The good news from the state was sandwiched between dire reports of proposed massive federal cuts to public schools Gov Jim Hunt told the group "I'm pleased to tell you that I have had long talks with budge leaders in the legislature and we agree that we do not need to make serious cuts in education
