home opener Sally who in passing yards had the second-best day in Duke history said he didn't know either He added that he and Bennett get along just fine and said there was never any doubt that the offense could score its last two times out Over in the corner of the lockerroom Jones who caught five passes for 167 yards was being properly modest Just as a rotten dessert can hurt a great meal a player who turned in a great performance could leave a bad taste if he were a goon afterward But Jones who had the third-best day in Duke history in yards gained by a receiver said he just goes out and gives it his best shot He said not getting much recognition doesn't bother him that his mother told him all things come to those who wait and that he believes her son lie wasn't needed His replacement Ron Sally hit 18 of 26 passes for 336 yards Sally a sophomore like Bennett was only 10 of 38 going into the game But on the first play from scrimmage he threw a 40-yard pass to Ron Frederick and never was really headed Despite his stats he wouldn't have been the hero if Duke had not scored on its last two possessions The former included a 52-yard pass to Cedrick Jones and a 25-yard touchdown pass to Frederick which cut Virginia's lead to 24-22 The latter started with 3:57 left and Duke on its 20 Sally was sacked on the first play Drama A decent game has to have drama The fans are flipping out But Sally gets up lie gets a pass interference call on the next play which negates an interception and touchdown by Virginia He flips a 3-yard pass to running back Mike Grayson a 10- yard pass to Mike Fuqua and then rears back and fires long Sally throws a soft spiral almost half the length of the field and hits Jones in stride for a 58- yard gain That puts the ball on the Virginia 7 Then it was Grayson's turn' Grayson who is 5-7 smaller than some of the cheerleaders runs for 5 yards and then scores on the following play "I've been around this game a long time and I don't know if I've ever been involved in a more dramatic finish than this game this afternoon" said Wilson He said he hadn't decided who would start at quarterback until early Saturday and no he crowd sang the school's theme song which sounds like Auld Lang Syne after every Virginia score It was stirring practically And although these were not Top 20 teams what also was nearly stirring was the way both played considering that neither had a starting quarterback and that Virginia almost had to search the stands for enough bodies to populate its defense Three of four regulars in the defensive backfield were out Duke was also hurting Ben Bennett about whom people always say nice things was expected to start at quarterback Bennett suffered a partial dislocation of his right shoulder at a game at Ohio State two weeks ago and could have played if needed said Duke coach Red VB Threatt who played at West Charlotte High: "The receivers maybe got a little intimidated They dropped the ball and the defense stayed on the field too long" Dooley said his team's pass rush disconcerted Wake Forest He also said he hasn't changed offensive philosophies: "I guess I am what they call 3 yards and a cloud of dust There's nothing wrong with that But they were up there crowding us They were going to force us to throw the ball and we did We're going to throw the football when they put them up on the line and run when they back them off" Groh said he wasn't suprised Virginia Tech threw so much but he was surprised that Wake 'Forest didn't defend better The Deacons now 1-3 upset Auburn last Saturday Against the Gobblers they led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 30-7 in the fourth quarter Somewhere in there Wake Forest lost its poise "I'm not discouraged" Groh Terrapins' leading rusher the past two seasons has an injured right ankle He missed last Saturday's loss to West Virginia and told Claiborne he was only 85 before the Terrapins met NC State So Claiborne stuck with other guys John Nash a former fullback who has been suffering from asthma and a bruised knee was the most prolific of the three tailbacks rushing for 104 yards and scoring Maryland's final touchdown from the 1 Willie Joyner also helped and Wysocki's only appearence was in a first-quarter cameo role as he lined up for a play that was whistled dead when the Terrapins Dooley "We got together a couple of good scoring drives right after it happened" Georgia immediately drove 88 yards for its first touchdown after the Gamecocks field-goal miss Although Walk er's running spearheaded the OP march it was aided by two flagrant face mask penalties I against South Carolina 4 Walker Walker plunged from the 3 for the first touchdown Shortly thereafter South Carolina quarterback Terry Bishop was intercepted by linebacker Nate Taylor at midfield and Georgia was on the move again Walker's 8-yard sprint around left end and Butler's extra point gave Georgia a 17-0 lead an insurmountable spread for South Carolina's inept offense A 28-yard scoring pass from quarterback Buck Belue to tight end Nate Brown became an easy fourth-period score Brown slipped behind free safety Robert Perlotte and had the end zone to himself when Perlotte fell Walker's 36 carries kept South Carolina's defense scrambling But Walker a sophomore all-America gave credit to the losers "1 thought South Carolina's defense actually did a pretty good job" said Walker "Our line was opening some holes and I made up my mind to break a few tackles" Walker did everything but break away His longest run was 16 yards but he consistently picked up first-down yardage His presence was demoralizing to South Carolina's overworked defense "1 used my power my shoulders more this week" said Walker comparing his production to last Saturday's 13-3 loss to Clemson "1 looked at the film of the Clemson game and I missed some openings I also tried to do too much on my own My line helped me today" South Carolina made two threats One ended just before halftime at the Georgia 22 when Bishop fumbled after being hit by tackle Jimmy Payne End Stan Dooley recovered for the Bulldogs The other was the missed field goal in the third period "Our defense was on the field much too long" said South Carolina coach Jim Car len "Our offense was poor We're young we broke down in a number of places We'll just have to keep working" Dooley praised his team "We rebounded and 1 felt we would" he said "Teams with a history of winning work all the harder at coming back after a loss What is difficult is to fourth year at Virginia Tech Throughout that time there has been one constant: When you watch a Dooley team you watch somebody usually a tailback tin the ball an awful lot 'This year Lawrence is that assistant at North earolina explained what hap-led after the Deacons started stacking up Lawrence: "Coach Ltooley has been around long epough to know that if they stop your basic plays you've got to go tO something else have always misconstrued coach Dooley" Groh continued "He likes to run the ball but he never said he didn't like passing" Early in the game Dooley did a god job of hiding his affection for passing The Gobbler ran Lawrence up the middle on third-and16 the first time they had the ball He gained all of 5 yards But with nine minutes left in the first half a 14-yard pass from qUarterback Steve Casey to Mike Glacolone gave Virginia Tech its first touchdown tying the score at 7 And the game's pivotal play was a pass Virginia Tech led 13-7 it) the third quarter when Wake Forest lost a fumble at its 32 On the next play Paige hit Giacolone on a fullback option touchdown pass That made it 20-7 and Wake Forest went from being slightly behind to seriously behind while South Carolina "I wasn't contributing enough by dodging and dancing on the outside" said Walker the Bulldogs' tailback "I hit the holes ran over some people It did more for the team" A Sanford Stadium crowd of 82100 saw Walker blast 3 yards for one third-quarter touchdown then sweep left end in the same period for 8 yards and another score to put the game out of reach Georgia had a 3-0 lead at halftime on Kevin Butler's 22-yard field goal midway through the first quarter but the Bulldogs' third-period outburst turned a close game into an easy victory "At the half I thought we might have to play a defensive game and protect our 3-0 lead" said Georgia coach Vince Dooley "The momentum turned our way in the third quarter when South Carolina missed its field goal attempt" The Gamecocks moved into scoring position following a dazzling 54-yard punt return by safety Troy Thomas Thomas ran to the Georgia 24 but there the Bulldogs stiffened Mark Fleetwood's 34-yard field goal try was wide and Georgia was on the way to handing the Gamecocks their first shutout in 27 games The last time they failed to score was in a 28-0 loss to North Carolina in 1979 Although Walker was a standout Georgia's
