the way" Indeed if McCullough thinks the Lions or Myers Park have le gitimate state championship chances there are other Southwestern 4A teams left behind that had legitimate hopes of being the I 0-team league's postseason representatives Four other teams Harding (13-10) Independence (14-11) North Mecklenburg (18-6) and Olympic (13-11) had winning overall records Charlotte hasn't had a state boys' champion since South Mecklenburg won the title in 1976 And the Southwestern 4A hasn't had more than one representative at the Western Regional since the current format was adopted in 1983 "I think this is the least we should expect from our teams" said Myers Park coach Bob Nastase "This is the biggest metropolitan area between Washington and Atlanta We should be producing great players and great teams every year" Here's a capsule look at 4A Western Regionals: Girls High Point Central (24-1) vs Morganton Freedom (19-5) 7 pm today: High Point Centrals only loss was in triple overtime North Mecklenburg Janet By DAVID SCOTT Staff Writer This should be a proud moment for high school basketball in Mecklenburg County Only eight boys' teams are left in the NC 4A state playoffs and two of them are from the county's own Southwestern 4A The girls' playoffs are at the same stage and the Southwestern 4A has one representative remaining North Mecklenburg's girls (23-3) open Western Regional tournament action tonight at 8:30 at Icard's East Burke High against Henderson Vance (23-1) But the success from the boys' side of the conference is the story On Friday at East Burke Southwestern 4A regular-season winner West Charlotte (21-6) plays Gastonia Huss (17-9) at 7 pm and tournament winner Myers Park (19-7) faces Roxboro Person (23-2) at 8:30 Aside from the Charlotte entries six other teams remain in the boys' tournament Huss and Person join the Charlotte schools in the West and Wilmington Laney Wilson Beddingfield Kinston and Fayetteville Smith are in the Eastern Regional at Wilson The other six teams are from six different school systems and five different conferences So even if West Charlotte and Myers Park lose on Friday thus preventing them from meeting each other for a fifth time this season the state 4A tournament so far makes Charlotte and the Southwestern 4A look pretty good "I think that any four of our teams could if they had gotten there have won in the first round of the state tournament" said Si 10 Opening ei IIM A-t 4''oc'e t- docroo-05 ct () 11p 14 OP13 ima to? 4P'ce ictoeqcVv-chv mil 0 it sabbal gil id 11 4 41 fook 4d kIledit Ovo0y Smith suggested using the facility for the Shrine Bowl soccer games and by UNCC in event the school should develop a football program "We are not announcing we are breaking ground" said Smith "We want to see where the interest is" Smith said if financing could be arranged through local governments or private investors the project could be completed in 12 months Reaction by local government leaders to any public funding for a project on private property was skeptical "I think there would be some problems there" said Mayor Harvey Gantt "I'd like to keep an open mind" The speedway is 12 miles from downtown Charlotte in Cabarrus County Members of the Cabarrus County Commission some of whom said they had anticipated Smith would finance the project himself were taken by surprise "At this point it's too early to say what relationship the county could have in this" said commissioner William Hamby Charles McGinnis another Cabarrus commissioner said a stadium would have a "significant economic impact" on the area but added it would probably have to be paid for with private money Also at the press conference was Charlotte businessman George Shinn who is pursuing a US Football League team for Charlotte for next season Smith who said his long-time interest in an NFL team continues added he would welcome Shinn's involvement in the project Shinn said he was impressed with the plan but added he could not become involved in financing It "I'm biting off all I can chew to get a team here" said Shinn "All I could offer would be a lease if it is built" Smith estimated his speedway events bring $100 million into the local economy He said completion of this project would pump another $ISO million into the area and provide Charlotte with an identity through pro sports "Charlotte has an identity problem" Smith said "This will get us a professional football team If you have a pro team here it solves all that" There's a precedent for pro football being played at a race track The Philadelphia Eagles led by Sonny Jurgensen's two touchdown passes defeated the Washington Redskins 17-10 in September 1961 in an exhibition played in the infield of Bristol (Tenn) Raceway Fewer than 2000 attended the game In the late 19506 the Redskins played several exhibitions in Winston-Salem's Bowman Gray Stadium a facility which continues to be used for both football and auto racing played
