One Davidson pen By SAM FULWOOD III Observer Staff Writer ORANGEBURG SC SC State's football team had a couple matters to settle Saturday with NC And it did with a 31-6 victory over the Aggies Foremost among the matters was the question of superiority in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Both the Bulldogs and Aggies were considered strong candidates to win the conference title and gain its first-ever automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs That gave Saturday's game extra meaning "I was kind of concerned about this ball game" said Bulldog coach Bill Davis "I'm glad they're behind us 1 wanted this game so much because it's an important game in our conference" The Bulldogs played as if there was no pressure on them taking control from the beginning They scored on their first four possessions forging a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter and 24-0 early in the second "We jumped on them pretty bad at first" said Davis "And that's what I thought we would have to do" Leading the way for the Bulldogs were running backs Henry Odom and Anthony Reed each with two touchdowns Reed the game's leading rusher with 152 yards on 19 carries said he didn't expect to play so well "I'm surprised" he said "I didn't know if I 'could play that much in the game I didn't practice until Wednesday because I hurt my knee in last week's game" In that game a 29-0 conquest of Delaware State Reed scored on a 2-yard run Odom who gained 40 yards on 13 carries started the Bulldogs' scoring with a 1-yard run about five minutes into the first quarter Junior Al Gardner kicked a 43-yard field goal the longest of his college career with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter Then about four minutes later running back Mack Reed scored on a 2-yard run MET averted total embarrassment by scoring midway though the fourth quarter Running back Waymon Pitts scored on a 5-yard run with 7:52 left Pitts entered the game as the NCAA Division IAA's leading rusher after his 130-yard performance last week against Winston-Salem State Against the Bulldogs however he gained only 31 yards but was the Aggies' leading rusher am ce Jed nd all lad ng rly to ng ith ler to ild ail Observer For a time in the fourth quarter of Davidson's 14-7 loss Saturday to Lafayette the Wildcats must have thought they were going to do it two times in a row Just as was the case in a victory last week over Wofford the Wildcats were rallying in the final period Well they almost did it but not quite Down 14-0 going into the last quarter the Wildcats scored once But their second drive was halted at the Leopard 5 when they were stopped a yard short of the first down And then the Leopards were able grind out the 4:40 left in the game The victory gives Lafayette a 2-0 record while Davidson falls to 1-2 Davidson coach Ed Farrell was concerned about the lack of consistency in the offense's execution but ultimately he blamed himself for the loss And it all centered on one play With 9:04 left in the game and Lafayette leading 14-7 the Wildcats began a drive from their 39 after a Lafayette punt With senior fullback Ray Sinclair (76 yards for the game) and sophomore halfback Bob Miller (47 yards) sharing the running the Wildcats got to the Leopard 7 with a fourth down and 3 Sophomore quarterback Keith Martin handed off to Sinclair who ranked third in the country in rushing last year But Sinclair was tackled on the 5 by Rich Doverspike "1 made a poor call we should have done something with a little more imagination" Farrell said "1 had called a reverse play the previous play and I decided to go with our trump card But it was not a good call I should have called an action pass with a fake to Sinclair "I apologized to the players They fought back and played well enough to win but I made a poor decision and didn't give them the chance" he continued "I'll get one back for them later on but that doesn't do them much good right now" The Wildcats' comeback was rousing They did not even get into Lafayette territory in the first half and only got as far as the 38 in the -third quarter At halftime the Leopards had out-gained the Wildcats 169-82 Lafayette quarterback Frank Novak was seven for 15 for 106 yards while Martin was three for eight for 43 yards Yet at the game's end Lafayette had only a 236-231 advantage in total yardage Novak did not complete a pass in the second half and ended up seven for 21 while Martin in his sec By BEA Spec For a I quarter of Saturday tc cats must were going a row Just as tory last wl Wildcats nal period Well just played poorly" said coach Jim McKinney "In the first half our defense wasn't in the ball game at all I don't know where they were wish 1 knew" McKinney said SC State clearly has the advantage now in the conference but the Aggies aren't completely out of the running "That was just our first (conference) game" he said "We aren't out of it But they have beat us in recent years and gone on to win the conference" And that brings up the other point the Bulldogs wanted to make The contest between these two schools is a season-making rivalry The two usually play close games but the Aggies haven't beaten the Bulldogs since 1972 when they won 15-14 And that's a statistic the Bulldogs wanted to continue Ic he 1 "Every year that I've been here it's come out this way" said junior Reed MET (1-1)
