Bragging words Boastful words Words that paraphrase the chant How 'bout them Dawgs! that carried Georgia's Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship They're also words that carried Clemson fans through the nightt and woke them this morning words their football team earned Saturday In a 13-3 upset that ended fourth-ranked Georgia's 15-game winning streak And how 'bout them Dawgs anyway? A shocking nine turnovers against a rowdy Clemson defense turned Georgia into just another highly rated team that failed to survive college football's early weeks And the Bulldogs fell on a day in which tailback Herschel Walker couldn't run and quarterback Buck Belue couldn't do much of anything Walker admitting to game-long jitters Inspired by the orange-flushed banks of 63500 fans fumbled three times Clemson recovered two That's from a sure-handed lad who lost only one fumble in his entire storybook freshman season Walker also averaged less than 4 yards a carry running 28 times for 111 yards "We knew Clemson would hit hard" he said "and we knew the crowd would make some tremendous noise What bothered me most was the noise" What bothered Belue most was the Tigers' hellish rush "Georgia's (offensive) line is a little inexperienced" said Clemson defensive tackle Dan Benish "so we knocked them on the head early to see what would happen When you see that take effect you just let it rip" The result was Walker not only didn't get room to varoom his only runs longer than 10 yards well for 11 and 21 but also that Belue was a harried passer Belue a senior threw his first five interceptions of the season and lost a fumble in the first half when See HOW Page 4C Col 4 Observer Pb510 By MARK SLUDER Clemsons Wil I ia in Pern (66) lloN es In To Recmer Georgia's llersehel alker Bryant admitted running through Miami was a tad tougher than rolling for 211 yards against East Carolina He wound up with 136 yards rushing Saturday and for one of his touchdowns he had to catch a pass The third-quarter scoring pass covered 15 yards Bryant also scored on runs of 8 4 2 and 1 yards Elkins completed 14 of 24 passes four to wide receiver Jon Richardson Despite the statistics though the offensive machine really wasn't that at all The Tar Heels led only 7-0 early in the second quarter when the Redskins gave one away Fresh By KEVIN QUIRK Observer Staff Writer CHAPEL HILL Someday some strange Saturday afternoon North Carolina is going to play a fourth quarter of a football game that isn't a romp There'll come a final quarter when starting players will have to think about important things such as blocking and tackling and when to put on their helmets But in Saturday's 49-7 joyride over Miami (Ohio) the Tar Heel regulars rested comfortably through the fourth quarter for the second consecutive week With another wide-margin victory assured they were free to dream about how good they'd look on distance and face a game where mistakes near the finish could do more than adjust a statistic The Tar Heels insist they'll be ready "We know they're not all going to come as easily as these two games have" said quarterback Rod Elkins "We never know how much we're going to score anyway If we score one touchdown we just try to go out and score another "We haven't really been tested but we have a lot of experience from last year and that'll take care of it" Bryant put it more simply "Sure" he said "we're ready for a tougher team" the game films or what they were going to do after the game Sure this one wasn't as simple or complete as the 56-0 drubbing of East Carolina last week The Redskins showed some tough defense early holding the Tar Heels to one first-quarter score And tailback Kelvin Bryant didn't get as many touchdowns as he did in UNC's opener He got five this time instead of six But the end result was the same Except for late cameo appearances by a couple of defensive starters trying unsuccessfully to preserve a Tar Heel shutout this was another 45-minute workout for the nation's No 10 team Someday they'll have to go the Kel in Bryant romp comes harder See THIS Page 5C Col 1 ho's No Sportswaves Michigan ips heish By ROGER SHULER special to
