He was a man of great ability with a knowledge of philosophy, science, literature and foreign languages. As a journalist, his common sense philosophy, wit and pithy style appealed to the colonists. He edited Poor Richard's Almanac for 25 years, from 1732 to 1757. It contained the usual information found in an almanac, but was replete with wise sayings concerning honesty, thrift, prudence, industry and patriotism. Reading material was scarce in the colonies, and Poor Richard's Almanac joined the Bible on the table in the average colonial home. About 10,000 copies were sold yearly and many people were influenced by the wisdom and high ideals incorporated in it. Many of the proverbs are popular today. Quotations such as "a penny saved is a penny earned", "God helps those who help themselves" and many others are frequently used today. 4-27 (Kenneth Piaskowski of Berlin, Conn., wins a prize for this question. You can win $10 cash plusAP's handsome World Yearbook if your question, mailed on a postcard to Junior Editors in care of this newspaper, is selected for a prize.)
