A thm crowd stood outside the hospital tent, murmuring in hushed voices about the accident. Inside the tent doctors and medical aides worked smoothly and quickly over the pilot, whose bared chest rose and fell jerkily as his lungs groped for air. Changes In water conditions too cold or too hot all these things affect their growth and sometimes mean death to the oysters. The raft and cage system is very handy.

Sometimes it is necessary to remove the whole bed to a place of safety, or they can be lowered when the torrential rains come, there is danger from octupi, crabs, eels and other sea inhabitants that attack tiie luscious bivalves and devour them. The operation Is the essential part of the pearl industry. This operation is most exacting and requires most delicate handling. None but the specially trained experts can perfem It. The principle of the operation was discovered In ancient China, where a tiny image of Buddha was inserted into a fresh water mussel which gave It a thin coating of nacre.

But it was Mikimoto-Kokichi, a native of Toba, who rfter 23 years of study and experiments perfected the method of cultivating pearls. In grading pearls, lustre and color come first; shape, second a pearl must be p.rfectly spheri- selves by a rop: and vhich they use as the container lor their catch and also a float while they take a rest. Pearl oysfe-s, which are different from ordinary edible oysters, live about 10 years. When they are three or four years old, they are brought up from the ocean bed and "operated upon. The operation, requiring the moot consummate skill of the expert, consists, briefly, in Inserting a tiny bead of mother-of pearl shell in the flesh of the oyster.

Thus im- Eregnated, the oysters are sent ack again into the ocean, this time In an Iron cage suspended a few feet under the surface from a log or bamboo raft by a cable. Then they are kept in the sea for two to four years, during which time the bead becomes coated with layers of nacre, which the oysters secrete, and emerges as a pearl. It takes four years for the nucleus to grow into a pearl; at least two years to become anything like a small pearL Pearl oysters are very delicate creatures and their life is in constant danger, not to speak of the difficult operation they are Pomonan Injured At Lone Pine in Auto Collision Edwin J. Gaulding, 1565 Vejar street, who suffered a broken neck and back injury last Sunday evening in an automobile accident while driving to Lone Pine to resume his work there as a boilermaker, may be flown back to Pomona Monday. This will depend on his physical condition.

Reports circulated locally to the effect that he was hurt at Indio are without foundation, according to members of the family, who expla ed than confusion probably developed because of a statement that Gaulding was working in the Inyo-Kern district. Gaulding was driving about eight miles south of Ridge Crest when his car was hit by an automobile in which three young people vere riding, it was stated. He was thrown out of his car and against the other vehicle as a result of the impact. He was taken to Ridge Crest hospital and was being kept there pending his return to Pomona. His wife, Mrs.

Verna Gtilding; his father-in-law, M. Austin, Pomona, and his brother, Ray Gaulding San Diego, visited him at the Ridge Crest hospital Tuesday. I'r. and Mrs. Gaulding and their 3-year-old daughter moved to Pomona from Los Angeles two years ago.
