Television The Sacramento Bee Final Tuesday October 13 1987 B1 1 Roseville produces a pair of pleasers THEATER REVIEW By John Hurst Bee Reviewer AFTER YEARS of false and fitful starts aimed at establishing live theater in Roseville the Sacramento suburb sports not one but two such troupes this season And a weekend look at their current offerings indicates that while both have mounted productions of more than passing adequacy neither is in danger of losing its amateur standing The newer of the? two is the arena-style Magic Circle Theatre which bowed in Gold Rush Plaza last summer with a staging of James "The and which is currently doing a credible production of the big musical Not much older is Roseville Theatre Productions a ka Showstoppers now into its second full season with an entertaining production of Joseph durable offbeat comedy and Old Lace" Both productions suffer from such slings and arrows of amateur theater as uneven casting a consequence of the availability of volunteer acting talent and the fact that both productions require large casts 14 in the case of and 18 in Girl" (with six of them double- and even triple-cast in minor roles) And if there are other flaws as well the surprise is not that they exist but that in neither case are they enough to spoil things for the audience But to spec ifics Girl" is the musical based on Isobel Iennarts hook about Fanny Brae a kind of female Jerry lewis whose star burned brightest in the and Mi's has some marvelous songs by Jule Sty ne "People" and Rain on My Parade" among them with lyrics by Bob Merrill that sparkle with wit and humor The indefatigable Gwyneth Bruch plays Fanny comedy are as delicious as they are varied there are 13 bodies in the Teddy I tells the disbelieving policeman responded to a disturbing-the-peace complaint gle calls) "Who are asks the officer is an antic and very funny play that relies tor much of its comic effect on the tions of Mortimer Brewster the sane nephew as he learns of his innocent homicidal bent and tries frantically to cover up Stephen Well-! man puts a lot of energy into the role but coolness to his heat His Mortimer needs at once more looseness and better command of the stage Andrea Lazar is also perhaps too cool as Morti- girlfriend Elaine (a role to be filled by Kathleen Kelly the last two weekends) But there is an especially winning turn by Jerry Reese as Mr Witherspoon proprietor of the Happy Dale Sanitarium to which Teddy will eventually be con- signed And there are neat ones by Roy Conrad as Dr Einstein plastic surgeon sidekick and by Ken Nitschke as the play-writing Officer Ir O'Hara Michael solid set a suitably Victo-rian affair of brown ivory and dusty pink lacks only the carpeting expect to find in such a home on the stairway that serves for Teddy as San Juan Hill 1 Quibbles aside the extant evidence suggests that live theater is alive and well in Roseville ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is playing at 8 Fridays and 1 Saturdays through Oct 31 in the Roseville Theatre 241 Vernon St Roseville Advance tickets $6 adults $5 se- mors students $4 children available through BASS $8 50 geripral at door For much to Barbra Streisand's interpretation in the film version not a bad role model Bruch makes no pretense of having a voice to match Still one can be grateful that she like the other singers in the cast manages to stay on pitch and on cue Bruch turns in an energetic entertaining and at-times-moving performance and there are deft andor winning turns as well by Betty Schoepf as the yente-ish Mrs Strakosh Mary Young as Mama Brice Gilmore Rizzo as pal Eddie Ryan John Chitambar as lover and husband Nick Arnstein and Michael Stoycoff as Florenz Zteg-feld The Geroulds have managed to get the cast through this total of 22 scenes in two acts with energy and dispatch The costumes by Charlotte French assembled with help from Michael Fitzpatrick and Bruch herself are marvelous And the music piano synthesizer and drums directed by Jennifer Vaughn suffers only because it lacks the bottom-end bounce a bass might supply A RSENIC and Old stars Kather-tne Loff and Geraldine Harrison as the dotty old aunts dedicated to providing eternal rest for elderly lonely gentlemen with draughts of poisoned elderberry wine The two are fine especially Leff as are Michael Mannion as Teddy Brewster the nephew who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt and Kevin Toole as Jonathan the nephew' who looks like Boris Karloff and will kill anyone who says as much With a setup like this naturally the openings for shifting
