Commerce at Han Francisco The following reply has been received San Francisco January 21 1S80 Joupph Hleffmt Kay Sacnuruuilo Roaido Dkak Hih In reply to your favor of tho 12th Instant suggesting the appointment of a committee to confer with the State Agricultural Society Mouhanie' Institute and other bodies with a view to arranging different date for the holding of fair at Sacramento and tide city I am instructed by tho Chamber to aay that union requited by the IMrctors of the several exhibitions it would not fool at liberty to appoint a committee for that purpose Very respectfully yours Morris Marcus Secretary Tliis is merely dodging If the Directors of the respective exhibitions' were disposed to arrange different dates there would be no occasion for tho appointment of any conference committee The truth is that the Directors of the Fair do not desire te inako any arrangement to prevent competition between the two Fairs and the Chamber of Commerce doubtlosa knows this very well Hence the evasion shown by the above letter The Fair management has always displayed an onvious and jealous spirit respecting the State Fair annually held In Haoramento and is unwilling to do anything to en-largo Its usefulness This howover is a foolish policy and reacts to tho injury of tho Mechanics' Fair When exhibitors and the public are obliged to choose between tho two exhibitions they invariably prefer the State Fair If the competition Is to continue it will be solely the fault of Han Francisco and Sacramento will not be the sufferer A fOOII I ME FUII IIHE CAPITAL There is need of a large land improvement company in this Htuto It has been a difficult tiling for poor men to obtain loans on term mortgages to improve small tracts of land In a conversation relating to our recent Citius Fair and its teachings Albert Callatin of this city advocated the formation of a loan company with largo capital whoae object would be to furnish money for land improvement on mortgages to cover a term of (say) fh yours Ho said there wore millions of dollars lying idle in this State which could he thus employed wdth prolit to capitalists ami to the great advancement of California It often happens that man exhausts his means in buying land and must wait years before he can earn sufficient money to improve it He hositatus to borrow on an ordinary snap action iron-jawed ami saw-toothed mortgage even where a loan on such security is within Ids roach for fear lest a foreclosure swallow up his all But if he could obtain- money nt moderate interest fur a term of five years ho would see his way clear to pay off tho indebtedness in that period A land improwunent company of large capital could find plenty of business in California and on loans made at seven per cent could probably return divi domls of five per cent per annum to stockholders Such companies have boon operating for years past in such States as Kansas and Nebraska The business properly conducted is absolutely safe New lauds in California are rapidly rising in vuluo and loans made on mortgages within present valuations of railroad or public lands are a secure as loans cun lie Tub Health Officer at Now York lias seized hundred of boxos of frozen oranges from Florida disinfected them with carbolio aoid and thrown them into the harbor This looks bad for Florida but augurs well for the future of the Northern California orange trade It has been shown that oranges once frozen arc dangerous to health This consideration will make Kastorn people shy of Florida oranges henceforth and must tend to increase the demand for sound fruit from California Orange orchards can bo planted in our northern foothills with absoluto confidence that the demand will be sufficient to tako at good prices all that can be supplied O' Hi ten "Had Belter Nucmnib-t'unib Climb" Marysville January 28 1B8G Editors Bkk In a communication published in your issue of yesterday Mr James O'Brien of Smartsvilie admits the correctness of my statement sometime since published in the Bkk as to tho extent of damage done at Long Bar and other localities by detritus and were he not in error in stating that I alleged his exhibit displayed at the Citrus Fair was taken from the Bonanza ranch I should not trouble you with this statement I said the exhibit of Mr was taken from a hillside ranch irrigated hy water from the Excelsior ditch and this fact Mr admits The only reference to the Bonanza ranch contained in my article is in connection with the location of Long Bar at which latter place the orange trees of Mr Ssxey were plant'd in I860 Referring to the original draft of my communication I find I stated that the Bonanza ranch was located on the south side of the Yuba river about 14 miles above Marysville but the types make me say about 10 miles alnive Bv retorence to his dictionary Mr will discover that is defined as far so that whether I stated the Bonanza ranch to he nhtmt 14 or 10 miles from Marysville I did not tell an untruth That every statement made by myself in my ownraunicatien to the Bex referred to by Mr is correct I still affirm Mr seems to feel aggrieved that I should select him as the advocate of the fertilizing power of slickens But when he mentioned slick ens in connection with his exhibit he in my opinion became a proper subject for criticism in connection with the slickens-pmducing hydraulic mines I did not intend to intimate that Mr or his company were responsible for all the damage claimed by me to have been done by hydraulic mining and 1 do not think my article conveyed that impression to anyone but himself Having vindicated the truth of my original statements I now take leave of Ute subject Stone Richards ourr A Sumwoos San Francis -o have been upon several important matters lately referred to it by the Boaid among which was the petition presented hy the Society for the Suppression of Vice for tho passage of a high license liquor ordinance A large number of poisons interested in the subject before the committee were present the Retail Liquor-Dealers Mutual Protective Association being fully represented by its President and Vice President Father Montgomery a mendier of the cleigy of St Mary Cathedial said ho apHuied with the approval of Archbishop iimrdan in behalf of the petition It was unusual said for a Catholic priest to take pait in affairs of this kind but the fart that a man was a priest did not justify him in evading the duties of a citizen There were 100000 Catholics in Han Fran cisco and be was noiry to say many of them in consequence of diuhkeneH were churchmen in name He had had much experience with the poorer clause of this city and Ip did not hesitate to assert that more than half the poverty and nearly all the crime California was due wholly to drink The people ot this Ht-ate were paying half their annual taxes dnectly either to maintain the poor or care for the crimi mils produced by liquor Ho Wlieved pmhibitiun was right hut imprivctiiable and while favoring the abolition of whisky selling ho was willing to accept the order here proposed as a half-loaf better than Hone ll tho petition was presented tn the voters of tins city he believed it would Ixi sustained hy a majority of the People Harrison on behalf of the liquor-men responded which ho stated that the petition was originated by fanatics and if allowed to influence the Board would throw many men out of employ tnent and deprive many good citizens of the mean of making a living Father Montgomery said lie was not one of the fatuities referred to The Inst was evidently fighting something not before the Board- prohibitum' Hi petition did not for prohibitum it only asked for regulation To lie me fchi is a waport town where the authonties regulated th mall-pox when it entered and yet the right ot the authoutie to regulate or quarantine tho greater evil of whisky is denied this was a movement to depvive some one of employment for when the saloon were shut up a number iff barkeepers would tx obliged to gotowoik Fnrmnwlf he was in favor of throwing the Imrkeepers out of employment and saving the wives and children term From its close he lived in retirement at his home in ackson fteld Om itted San Joan Jan Reid who recently tried to horsewhip Rev Dr Snowden a Presbyterian minister was to-day convicted of disturbi ng the peace Sentence will be pronounced Monday Thu great fact brought out by thin table is that Oroville has an average annual temperature about four degrees higher than that of Los Angeles This Is mainly due to the wider range of temperature at the southern city The yearly average of the minimum readings of the thermometer is several degrees lower then than at Oroville Tho table also shows that at Los Angeles the temperature rises to a much higher point than at our foothill town though tho avorages for tho Hummer months are highor at Oroville Tho latter has accordingly a moro equable climate Tho fall of temperature during tho Summer nights at Los Angeles is very marked In some of the Summer months there as shown by the table the maximum temperature is more tlnn double the minimum Such great changes are unknown at Oroville For the two years covered by the table the lowest temperature at Oro-villo was 25" Ms Arents writes that this is exceptionally low for Oroville ami the lowest that he has known dur ing a residence of seven years at that place The Bkis is informed by tho Higual Service officer at Los Angelos that tho lowest temperature recorded there during the past seven years was 28u on February 6 1881 The difference between this minimum and that of 259 for Oroville is too little to be of any Importance and may be attributed to a difference in tho exposure of the thermometer used the one read by the Signal Service at Los Angeles being high above tho grovud Kiversido one of the most fnoml locations in Southern California for orange-growing confesses to A temperature of 2(1 this month As we have before taken occasion to point out the explanation of the earlier ripening and the better quality of the oinnge at Oioville than at Los Angelos is found in the higher average tempera turo at tho former place during the Hummer months This climatic difference is strikingly exhibited in the following comparison of monthy means: AMUSEMENTS Agricultural Park
