TU-Hadio The Miami Herald Tuesday July 26 1983 6B Fine portrait of artist Rubens New owner replaces WCIX news director Cable Preview old masters were absorbed at the courts of Europe in the royal collections of Spain France and England where he was hired to add to their glories He was a whiz and by 35 he had achieved the requisite reputation and fortune his ambition required Back in his native Antwerp Rubens built an Italianate mansion which included a studio so sumptuous that it became a stopping place on the itinerary of visiting notables As they watched from the balcony Rubens talked art and appeared to be painting Meanwhile the real painting was taking place in the not-for-the-public workshop where Van Dyck was his portrait painter and anonymous others carried out the chores of tree painting animal painting fruit painting etc Rubens never lied about his actual participation in a finished painting charging according to how much was from his hands and he always claimed responsibility for the initial concept and for rendering final approval before a work left the shop He was honest then as well as being a scholar a humanist and a masterly painter It is no wonder we cannot bear the evidence of all that in his grandest works nor suffer ourselves to like him fine for we do not have to like Rubens to like Hughes sees to that By HELEN KOHEN Art Critic Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is the one great artist everyone knows at least well enough to dislike For the better part of this century he has been out of fashion the sight of his full-blown women in their extravagance of rosiness and flesh an affront on those popular sensibilities that define 5 foot 8 inches and 108 pounds as the perfect female form In addition Rubens was a rich artist lucky in life and in love making an immodest success at the one profession a soul is supposed to fade from bitter and starving Everything we hold against him makes a wonderful story' however really a grand opera that can stimulate and hold interest well beyond the time it takes to present Subscribers to the HearstABC Arts cable are thus lucky indeed with this a 90-minute show on Rubens written and narrated by Robert Hughes to be aired at 10:20 pm Wednesday The critic and art historian whose columns appear in Time magazine Hughes made his TV debut in this country as writer and narrator of the gruff and accurate of the series on modernism With he again shows himself to have style working with the ease of an entertainer to deliver good television without losing credibility as a scholar and commentator If art is to be relieved of its elitist burdens yet kept isolated from the lesser results of human endeavor Hughes is just the sort to do it His art programs unlike the usual fare are neither just travelogues nor boring is travelogue of course as any story of this artist must be for he was an ambassador for several reigning monarchs during his career acting as diplomat and court painter at the same time He was also in another sense the ambassador of the Baroque setting a standard for showiness in art that was to last a full 200 years after his death If we cannot imagine to what extent Rubens was revered or how such reverence was sustained for so long a time we can learn from Hughes as he ticks off the virtues and triumphs and tells how from an early age Rubens became intoxicated with the idea of soaring above all the artists who had ever lived But first he had to learn For Rubens travel and study were the means: to Venice to see the Titians and the Tintorettos and the Veroneses to Rome for Michelangelo Raphael and the classical works of sculpture and to Mantua for the Montagna frescos Other of the work affiliates think anyone expects to be fired but you have to be blood into Ch news operation Taft which took over the station May 1 has announced plans to mount a serious news operation as compared to what has been under previous owners General Cinema a rather modest effort Specific changes however remain under study Ch 6 now broadcasts local news only once a day at 10 pm As an independent Its news has not seriously competed with the news programs aired by
