Nevertheless, consumers are shopping carefully, and most retailers are disappointed in the trade showing so far.

They remain hopeful. The bureau said March dollar volume will be ahead of 1949, and the total for March and April shouldnt show too much change from a year ago." The National Retail Dry Good association sets the barometer for March' business at pretty good." Easter trade was slow in starting, the association said, but lt now is picking up. The most cautious estimate of total Easter shopping volume was given by one national organization as unchanged to as much as 3 to 5 per cent under a year ago." Jerome Udell of Max Udell Sons Company, mens clothing manufacturer, showed high optimism. "The mens clothing business, and business In general, Is expected to be exceptionally good thru March and April," he said. I attribute this to the end of the coal strike and the slow-down in industry that accompanied it, to the distribution of G.

Red-Led Strike Hits Milan, Italy MILAN, Italy, March 20 UP) Thousands of communist led workers quit work suddenly today and packed Milans main square in a protest demonstration against strict new government measures to keep order in Italy. NEW YORK, March 20 CP) The brakes are on the traditional Easter shopping boom right now, but most businessmen still hope th can beat last years total or come close to lt. There are two measuring sticks by which to judge Easter trade dollar and unit volume. Most authorities agree the dollar volume is going to be about equal to a year ago, give or take a few percentage points. But all are sure the physical volume of suits and dresses and hats and a long list of other Easter things is going to be higher than a year ago.

Thats because of price reductions during the past year all along the line. One source estimates prices are down an average of three per cent for the year. One Week Earlier Easter falls on April 9 this year, one week earlier than last year.v The very earliness of Easter, however, makes for a short shopping season. With the weather still cold, Easter slips up on peo- pie before they know It. W.

Ian Mack, business consultant, believes it Is a little early to judge the temper of Easter business, but says: "The expectation Is there will be fairly brisk retail trade right up to Easter. March will exceed a year ago, or approximate it, in dollar volume. Unit sales should show an appreciable increase." Mack believe adverse weather has been a factor so far in holding back sales In some sections. Another research organization of national reputation says there arent many indications so far of Easter shopping getting underway. Apparel sales are below a year ago both on a dollar and unit basis, but the total should be above a year ago on both counts wthin a week or two.

"March and April together. this organization predicted, "should be above 1949 on a unit basis and slightly higher on a dollar basis. The organization did not want its name used, 1 Two Main Trends The International Statistical Bureau, a business reporting service, summarizes conditions In this way: There are two main trends. The first is the favorable showing of durable goods, like television sets, This largely results from elimlna tion of consumer credit curbs Part of present retail trade sta bility Is due to expansion of con sumer debt, such as mortgages which results in spending for household furnishings. ERIE, March 20 CB Mike Palermo, Erie tavern owner, put $9,005 in the bank today and turned his attention to his young son who had been missing with the money for nearly two days, Im going to talk to that young man," Mike said shortly after re turning his 11-year old son, Nick, from Pittsburgh. Nick, who cheerfully admitted hed taken his dads life savings of between $9,100 and $9,200 last Friday, was just a little bit glum after the trip here. Young Palermo and two companions, 13-year old Michael Manning, and 12-year old Paul Youclan, were apprehended in the steel city yesterday. They still had $9,005 In bills, mostly in $50, $100 and $500 denominations. And they also had new clothes and shoes which they had purchased.

As close as the elder Palermo could figure it, the boys spent about $150 in their bus and rail trip which took them to Mead-ville, Youngstown, and finally, Pittsburgh. They stayed in three hotels during the trip. One of the items they purchased, a $36 portable radio, indirectly led to their apprehension by police. Nick said he and his companions were just ready to retire in their hotel room when a news announcer said: Police are looking for nine thousand dollars and three boys in Pittsburgh." He related that he, Manning and Youclan were really scared. We started to walk out of town.

Then Paul got sick so we started back to the hotel on a trolley. A couple of cops picked us up right after we got off. Nicks father came to Pittsburgh and said he was "greatly relieved" to get both his son and money back. He explained he had the money in his home because he planned to use it in a business deal. Both Erie police and Palermo indicated no charges would be brought against the boys.
