Gang Feuding Police blame juvenile gang warfare for the shooting of Raymond Padilla, 21, of Ontario last night in San Bernardino. Padilla is being treated in the San Bernardino County Hospital for a severe shotgun wound in the knee. Officers said he apparently was the innocent victim of gang violence.

Padilla, who lives at 1704 S. Campus told police a car containing four youths forced the car in which he was riding to the curb at about 6 last night. Padilla climbed out and walked toward the other car, and one of the occupants of the other car approached him. Then, Padilla said, he heard a gun blast and felt a numbness in his leg. The other car left and Padillas friends took him to the hospital.

With Padilla were Sal-vadore Binulos, 17, of 1017 S. Bon View Ontario, driver. Bob Gomez, 17, of 535 E. Grove Ontario, Andy Cornejo, 17, of 1201 E. State St Ontario, and Mary Castillo, 20, of Colton.

Vf-5 k4 Vl KATHERINE BRACHER Scholarship Awarded to Claremonter CLAREMONT Katherine Braeher, a senior at Girls Collegiate School, has won a National Merit Scholarship to Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.

Miss Braeher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Brach er, 230 W. 7th was one of 525 scholarship winners thru-out the United States. The Claremonter had her choice of colleges and selected Mount Holyoke where she will major in languages.

Last spring she won a medal in French proficiency competition sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of French. Miss Braeher has attended Girls Collegiate since the eighth grade. Prior to that she attended Sycamore School in Claremont. Merit scholars were chosen in a nationwide selection process conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation with funds received from the Ford Foundation. The 500 winners were selected from an original 58.000 candidates nominated by 10.000 school sthruout the country.

Nineteen corporations are supporting sponsors of the program. Total cost of the scholarships is $3,160,000. 4 Men Awarded 1-Year Grants fy Foundation CLAREMONT Three faculty members of the Associated Colleges have been awarded fellowships for 1956-57 by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Fellowship winners are Dr. John H.

Kemble and Dr. Frederick L. Mulhauser of Pomona College and Roger E. Kuntz of Scripps College. Dr.

Kemble, a professor in history, will use his fellowship to do research and writing to complete a book on the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest and will spend about four months in the British Isles and Western Europe. Dr. Mulhauser, who teaches English, will spend the year in England where he will do reading and research in the religious beliefs and background of Victorian England. Dr. Mulhauser is preparing a critical study of Arthur Hugh Clough, English poet.

Kuntz, who is a visiting instructor in art at Scripps and Claremont Graduate School, will do a series of paintings in which he will explore a middle ground between nonobjective and objective paintings. Kuntz, who has received six prizes for oils and serigraphs since 1952, began his painting at Scripps under Henry Lee McFee, Millard Sheets and Sueo Serisawa. His work is represented in collections in the Pasadena Art Museum, Dallas Museum, National Academy of Design, Denver Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum, Scripps Art Galleries, and in numerous pri vate collections. Dr. Kembie is an authority on maritime history of the Pa cific Coast and is author of the book, The Panama Route, 1848-1869 and editor of the book, Journal of a Cruise to California and the Sandwich Islands in the United States Sloop-of-War Cyane.

He holds his B. A. from Stanford Uni versity and M. A. andf Ph.

D. degrees from the University of California. Dr. Mulhauser is a specialist on Victorian literature. He was co-editor of the first complete edition of the poems of Arthur Hugh Clough to be published in America and authored the book Selected Poetry and Prose of Matthew' Arnold.

He has been on the Pomona, faculty since 1941. were stationd at the Chino police station; Harold Steinmeier and Roy Butlerboth of Ontario, at the staging area; Cason Mast of Ontario at the first relay point on a hilltop; and at the arena in Soquel Canyon, Har-land Peebles of San Dimas and Harold Garrod of Chino. It was the second year that the radio club had furnished a communications network to the ranch ride. Home Beautiful Contest Slated UPLAND Chamber of Commerce President Ralph H. Miller will be the judge of a home beautiful contest at 10 a.m.

next Saturday at Euclid Estates to determine what owner has made the exterior of his home the most beautiful since its purchase. The winner will receive a gift, certificate, according to the contest sponsor, Don Schmidt, builder and developer who has the second unit under SAN DIMAS Frederick Michael 740 N. Amelia died Friday at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Fontana, after a short illness. He was 75. Lawler came to San Dimas from San Francisco where he resided for six years.

He came to California from Chicago in 1921 and settled in Fresno. He is survived by his widow, Ruth Lawler, of San Dimas; a son, Bill Lawler of San Dimas; two stepsons, Leonard Dyer and Clarence Dyer, both of Vacaville and five grandchildren. There will be no funeral services. His body was willed to the UCLA Medical School. VISITOR John Hamilton of the West Covina Junior Chamber of Commerce is greeted by Congressman Pat Hillings in Washington.

Hamilton was in Washington as Californias representative to the National Jaycee Rally on the Hoover Commission report. Tri-County Music Fete Planned in Claremont CHINO Eleven hundred nd seventy-nine riders made the 6-mile journey to Soguel Canyon yesterday in the 20th annual Chino Rancho Ride. Ride Chairman E. W. Soper said that with perfect weather, no dust and no mud I think everyone had a wonderful time.

The riders were led by Sheriff Frank Bland of San Bernardino County and Miss Barbara Newman, Miss Chino of 1956. About .1,300 people including those who rode to the canyon in buses took part in the barbecue and watched gymkhana during the afternoon. Five-year-old Linda Harald of the CJ Ranch in Chino was the youngest rider on the outing and R- J. Elford, 76, of Riverside whs the oldest. First place winners in the various events were: Ontario Mounted Police, uniformed group; Riverside riders, nonuni-formed group; Lyn Findley of Ontario, ladies single; Johnny Mulharron of Chino, gents single; Carol Duncan of Riverside, stock horse class; Evelyn Fanning of Duarte, trail horse class; Gloria Holmes of San Bernardino, musical chairs; and Don Poistran of Downey, boot race.

A saddle was awarded to D. F. Schneibli. Communications between the riders and various law enforcement agencies were furnished by members of the Tri-County Amateur Radio who set up a system of mobile units to relay messages thru the hilly country. H.

Jackson Majors is vice-chairman and Mrs. Roy J. Mc-Grew is secretary. Kenneth Fiske, professor of music at Pomona College, will conduct the combined orchestras in Gaiete Parisienne by Offenbach and Overture to Rosamunde by Shubert. The mixed choruses will be directed by Howard Swan, chairman of the music department at Occidental College.

CLAREMONT The 17th annual Tri-County League Music Festival will be held May 4 at 8 p.m. in Bridges Auditorium. T' Claremont High School orchestra and girls chorus will participate in the event along with musical groups from Pomona, Bonita, Chino, Citrus and Corona high schools. Oil Industry Production Told SACRAMENTO CP) The State Board of Equalization today reported the California petroleum industry distributed 3.1 billion gallons of gasoline and other motor fuel during an eight month period starting July 1. The industry counted an additional billion gallons in fuel for military use, export and other non-taxable activities. Gas taxes in February brought the state 1912 million dollars for building and maintaining state and local roads.
