Furman Rally Frustrates Apps By DAVID SCOTT obwrr Stiff Wrttor BOONE When things are going wrong for a football team with an offense as capable as Appalachian State's there aren't always easy explanations Saturday for the 10th straight game dating back to the fourth week of the 1981 season things went wrong for the Apps Leading by two touchdowns at halftime they lost 2721 to visiting Furman in a Southern Conference game Appalachian hasn't won in 10 games although it tied Virginia Military during its 3-7-1 season of 1981 Games like Saturday and last week against James Madison with the Apps losing sizable leads keep cropping up "If I knew why I wouldn't let it happen" said Mountaineer coach Mike Working "If anybody would tell us what we were doing wrong" said linebacker Rusty Hicks of Boone "we'd win more games" Perhaps the problem lies with the defense which allowed 39 points in the season-opener last week against James Madison Furman shut down by the Apps in the first half finished with 416 total yards ApPalachlan had 397 Still Working Hicks and Paladin coach Dick Sheridan don't pin the frustrating streak on the defense pPEEDWAY4WILII EtC111TkrAk: iltsaaohmovwl ficifiase4 Jennings Williams "We've got to be the unluckiest team in America right now" said Working "They say it all balances out I can't wait for that to come" Hicks: "I know we had some kind of jinx on us in the second half We kept playing hard I know that" Sheridan whose team rebounded after a season-opening loss to NC State: "We were most fortunate If they (Appalachian) get one good break it's going to turn it around for them" After Furman spotted the Apps two first-half touchdowns the Paladins stormed back Furman got the winning touchdown with 7:14 left In the game getting the ball when Appalachian's Tim Martin fumbled at the Mountaineer 16 Five plays later Dennis WilHams scored from 1 yard although Tim Tanguay's conversion was blocked Actually Furman got back Into the game not because of bad breaks for Appalachian but on some solid play of its own "1 don't know what Dick told them at halftime" said Working with a grin "I don't know if he threatened them or what" Sheridan said "There was nothing magic about it We felt the only way to win was to take charge physically We just blocked better and our backs ran with some extra effort" The Paladins trailed 140 after Appalachian's first-quarter 12- yard touchdown pass from Lincolnton's Stan Goodson to Rusty Fuller of Dillon SC and a second-quarter 4-yard scoring pass from Goodson to Monroe's Johnny Sowell But on their first possession in the third quarter the Paladins took the ball 63 and cut the margin to 14-7 on a 2-yard run by Stanford Jennings Jennings was one of those "extra effort" backs -Sheridan spoke of finishing with 153 yards WilHams also had 153 Then Furman recovered from a break that went Appalachian's way On the Paladins' next possession Robbie Gardner fumbled as he crossed the goal line and Hicks recovered for the Apps Appalachian ended up punting and Furman came right back tying it at 14 on a 51-yard run by Williams Appalachian answered with a long touchdown run this one a 65-yarder by Alvin Parker that gave the Mountaineers a 21-14 lead with 3:23 left in the third period The Paladins with the ball at the App 29 appeared ready to tie the game at 21 but a Bobby Lamb pass was intercepted by Curtis Inman But Inman fumbled and Furman had it back at the 13 Two plays later Lamb scored from 7 yards and Tanguay's point-after tied it with 9:13 Furman 0 0 14 13-27 Appalachian
