Sunday, Nov. 9, 1980 Santa Cruz Sentinel 27 HAWAII'S NEW FLOATING ISLAND morning at 8:30 a.m. The ship is still working out the bugs; it has only been operating since June. But already it has been accepted with such enthusiasm, the line is considering the purchase of another luxury liner to run the same cruise route. In a day when many passenger lines are going under, it's encouraging to see an American luxury liner coming up for a second breath.

behind the hotel which overlook the harbor and the steeply rising cliffs on the other side. The little town of Luhui is really a town with gas stations, dime stores and laudromats. You have to look hard to find a boutique here. On the other side of the island, you'll find excellent snorkling and scuba diving with hundreds of colorful fish swimming right offshore. The ship leaves Kauai at 5:30 p.m.

and after a final night at sea, arrives in Honolulu Saturday harbor of Nawiliwili on the eastern side of Kauai. Kauai is known as the garden island because it is lush and green from the frequent rains. It rains here more than any place on earth. And if you're just a little tired of the Disneyland-like commercialism that pervades through most of the islands, Kauai will offer a welcome relief. Sunbathers can walk a few hundred yards to the beach in front of the Kauai Surf Hotel.

While many people today prefer to see one or two of the Hawaiian islands during a week-long vacation, the idea of cruising the four main islands (Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai) during a seven-day trip has a certain exotic appeal. A person can either relax on the ship during the cruise, or take advantage of the island tours available at the four ports that the SS Oceanic Independence calls on. The ship sails each Saturday at midnight from the Aloha Tower in Honolulu and spends all day Sunday and Sunday night cruising lazily through the Molokai channel, around Molokai and Lanai, past Maui and around the big island to Hilo, where she docks early Monday morning. Several tours of the island a are available to the passengers, or, they can rent cars on their own.

Cars are extremely inexpensive to rent as there is no charge for mileage, with a basic rate of about $15 per day. Add about' $6 or $7 for gas and you're ready for an all-day jaunt around the Hilo side of the island. Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes from port. Here you can see a steaming crater which stretches for miles across. Beautiful Akaka Falls are only a short drive as well.

Hilo is also home to several world famous orchid nurseries. The ship sails from Hilo that night and arrives on the other side Tuesday afternoon and anchors off Kona. A ferry shuttles passengers to the Kailua port where they are free to roam the countless boutiques and gift shops. If you're a golfer, don't forget to bring along your clubs. Some of the most fantastic and lush courses are minutes away from each port the ship calls on.

While the green fees are a little steep, the views are magnificent and the fairways and greens are maintained to perfection. Purple, orange, pink and red Bougainvillaea bushes line many of the links. After another night of sailing, the ship docks at Kahului on the north side of Maui. Most folks depart here for the other side of the island and a historic old whaling town called Lahaina. While the town still retains a certain historic visual quality, inside the quaint old facades you'll find one gift shop after another.

Few people will ever see this beautiful little hamlet in California, it is so far off the beaten-to-death tourist path. A Jity. It is a very special treat. There is no volcano here.

It is so named because it sits in a deep basin of the Mother Lode mountains. When yoi drive into it. you feel as if you have descended into the cone of a volcano. And then you wonder aboui the old horse and buggy days and you know that, once winter and snow had corm. nobody ever got out of this deep dip until spring ard the thaw.

I could make a pretty good case for the fact that the Civil War was won here. With one gun. An ugly little cannon named "Old Abe." The Confederacy was losing. It had run out of money to fight the war. Plantation matrons had hocked their silverware for the cause Far away in the mines of the Mother Lode o( the West in Volcano were Southern sympathies.

Sympathies and gold. Millions of dollars worth of gold. Enough to put the South back on the battlefields in good health. One dark night the Southern boys of Volcano decided to move the needed gold out of Volcano and take it to Dixie, where it might turn the tide. But the local Yankees get wind of the plan and pulled out "Old Abe." That one cannon, aimed at the wagons of the boys of the South, stopped the movement of the gold.

And it may have stopped the war. Who knows? Volcano is tucked away down a five-mile side road in Amador County. Back in the Gold Rush days, miners found their way here and found placer gold in every nook and cranny. But it was not until 1853 when they brought in the hydraulic monitor (giant water nozzle) that the deposits could be exploited. However, recently 50 people turned up at the town meeting in Pine Grove, just up the road, and turned down the idea of naming the road that links Pine Grove to Volcano after the general. The road's name now is simply Pine Grove-Volcano Road. Some people at the meeting, however, said people in the communities are going to have to find "something around here to name after the general." Some years ago. I met and worked with a mild little newspaper photographer named Joe Rosenthal who took that famous picture of the flag raising at Iwo Jima.
