Record-setting tailback Amos Lawrence started off the game with a bang on a 62-yard run on the Tarheels lirst possession, which was capped by his 1-yard scoring plunge. SMU 20, Texas 0 IRVING, Texas AP) Southern Methodist converted two long punt returns by cornerback John Simmons and two blocked kicks into a 20-0 lead and the 19th ranked Mustangs went on to defeat Texas Saturday in a regionally televised Southwest Conference game. Linebacker Byron Hunt opened SMU scoring in the first quarter by blocking a punt and taking it 59 yards lor a touchdown. Moments later, Simmons shocked the Texas Stadium crowd of 41,289 with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown. For the day, Simmons returned 3 punts for 122 yards, including a 53-yard scamper that set up Eddie Garcia's 53-yard field goal. Simmons also blocked an field goal try, and Hunt ran 51 yards with a loose ball to set up a 28-yard lield goal.

Freshman Lance Mcllhenny, who engineered SMU's 20-6 upset of Texas a week ago, got his second straight start. Mitchell Bennett's leaping catch of Mcllhenny's 5-yard pass in the fourth quarter wrapped up the scoring for the Mustangs. Trocano, who played defensive back until Pittsburgh's regular quarterback, Dan Marino, was injured three weeks ago, completed 20 of 35 passes tor 276 yards as Pittsburgh raised its record to 7-1.

McMillan ended the game with 126 yardsi rushing. The Pitt defense, led by heralded end Hugh Green, dominated the Syracuse offense, keeping the Orangemen in poor field position throughout the game. Syracuse's only score came as quarterback Dave Warner ran 1 yard on the final play of the first half. The Panther defense held Syracuse's all-time leading rusher, tailback Joe Morris, to 16 yards on 12 carries. Morris had averaged more than 162 yards a game before the kickoff.

Dave Trout kicked field goals of 36, 34 and 26 yards for Pitt. Syracuse fell to 4-4. Penn St. 27, Miami (Fla.) 12 STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
