In a movie that not incidentally also I 4 stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin it's tellm ing that Dolly 44 Parton seems to be the main in- REVIEW terest And given that "Nine To Five" turns out not to be a serious look at sex discrimination but a slapstick farce Parton's presence may be the movie's saving grace Tomlin Fonda and Parton play secretaries who have had it up to here with the boss a leering small-minded minor executive played by Dabney Coleman Coleman as narrowly drawn as his burned-up underlings not only subjects his secretaries to the humiliation of doing personal chores on company time but passes off their business ideas as his own He also and this should come as no surprise covets all of Parton's considerable assets The first hour shows promise as the trio silently fumes while being treated like messenger boys Someone's stack is about to blow and the impression is the results will be spectacular But that's where one movie ends and another begins Director Colin Higgins who says he spent time researching secretaries' complaints about their bosses apparently decided halfway through that sex discrimination wasn't all that funny His problem: "Nine To Five" was designed as a comedy So he switched from the serious allegations secretaries being forced to gas up bosses' cars and to submit to their advances to slapstick in which Tomlin Fonda and Parton get even with the rotten-to-the-core Coleman One night after a particularly frustrating day they share a marijuana cigarette provided by Tomlin's son and they imagine how each would do the boss in The sequences are amusing but jarring because their style so completely deviates from the first half When the next day Tomlin's fantasy of poisoning the boss seems to come true they scramble to cover the crime and then discover the body is very much alive In what becomes a fairly funny sequence they imprison Coleman engineer a bribe attempt and are finally vindicated The last hour is humorous but it doesn't deliver on the promise of the first Tomlin Fonda and Parton don't prove they're equals only that they have dumb luck They don't come off as thinking women but as the ding-a-lings caricatures the film's premise was supposed to refute For that matter the men don't do any better Coleman the only constant male presence is mean-spirited petty and unfeeling If the issue weren't taken so seriously in "Nine To Five" 's early moments the last half would make a good movie Even with the inconsistent tone Tomlin Parton and Fonda are effective as the beleaguered secretaries Parton with a refreshing candor is remarkably good in her first role The serious movie about sex discrimination is still to be made though Two requirements for Italian director Pier Pasolini's actors in the X-rated "The Canterbury Tales" seem to be rotten teeth and bad skin But in 14th century England I suppose at least rotten FT 1 7 fi 0 tt lc 0 111 tt g' tr "I 11 cli tli 7: UI ni II di rc ft 01 9: CI ni ar Ti A ME COMEDY TEAM teF THE 80's!
