($425) with either beef or chicken are deep fried burritos with that slight greasiness that makes Mexican food succulent They're covered with lettuce tomatoes cheese guacamole and sour cream The finished dish resembles Mount St Helens Typical in American restaurants the menu is divided: appetizers main courses and one 8'1ligsalm'aalmma dessert Even appetizers are a meal The nachos covered with atherine cheddar and monterrey jack apin cheese guaca- mole jalapeno )UT peppers and sour cream come steaming on a large plate The quesadillas ($175) for milder tastes are flour tortillas folded over melted cheese The only dessert La Paz offers Is bunuelos pastry dough deep-fried dusted with cinnamon and sugar and served with ice cream and chocolate sauce ($250 for two $395 for four) Unfortunately (or come to think of it fortunately) La Paz had run out of bunuelos the night I ordered them An attraction of Mexican food Is that it's cheap and La Paz's meals are very reasonable Appetizers run from $175 to $325 Main courses are $350 for a bowl of Texas chill (it contains beans so I'm not sure how "Texas" it is) to $695 Combination plates (unknown In Mexico no one eats that much starch at one sitting) contain burritos tacos and enchiladas In various combinations and run $4 to $650 I hope someday to see a "Mexican" Mexican restaurant here Burritos and tacos are a small part of Mexican cooking and actually pretty bland when you consider Mole Poblano chicken or turkey with a sauce of raisins almonds and chocolate is Mexico's national dish But for now La Paz does nicely The only problem was with the crowding Sometimes the waitresses were so frazzled they barely had time to speak We can hope for a little less success for La Paz so the waitresses can catch their breath Elvis Costello's Newest Sounds Like Rolling Stone magazine's Dave Marsh reviews recent Os for us rating them from to In ascending order of quality ELVIS COSTELLO "Taking Liberties" (Columbia): This is the second collection of 20 songs on a single disc that Costello has released in 1980 If It's less coherent than the soul-oriented "Get Happy" that's because these are leftovers and sides from his English albums and singles Fanatic Costello devotees probably already have most of this music but those who don't will value the lovely but bizarre country oddity "Stranger in the House" the rockers "Girls Talk" "(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea" and "Wednesday Week" and the softer "Big Tears" and "Dr Luther's Assistant" By far the most scarifying number here is "Night Rally" and I'd argue that it is both the best track and the one Costello track that's been left off 44Ai Mballateller 4MMMOIMMMill WE WERE WRONG Gen Charles Cornwallis was Incorrectly called George in last Friday's EXTRA
