underscored Saturday The Tigers held a seemingly secure 35-7 fourth-quarter lead over Wake Forest only to have the Deacons score 26 points in the game's final 8 minutes in a 35-33 Clemson escape act Overwhelmed by a Clemson defense that gave the offense all of its first half scoring opportunities Wake Forest's finish was a stunner All kinds of strange things happened during the Deacon surge Two onsides kicks were recovered by the kicker 5-8 138-pound junior Mark Usdin who was in the game only because regular kicker Phil Denfield sustained a leg bruise Harassed and hounded earlier Wake quarterback Jay Venuto threw three touchdown passes two to Kenny Duckett and another to Bill Ruffner in those final 8 minutes For the day he was 28 of 56 for 283 yards When it was all over a safety that the Deacons suffered in the fourth quarter might have decided the game On that play a snap out of the shotgun formation went over Venuto's head and into the end zone Deacon coach John Mackovic doesn't think the play was the difference "A lot of things made the difference" Mackovic said "You could say Obed Arid was the difference He kicked four field goals We went for the two-point play on two attempts and didn't make it That was part of the difference" In the other dressing room Clemson's Danny Ford was shaking his head about how what seemed an easy victory the Tigers' fifth in eight games (2-2 in the ACC) almost didn't happen "We'd have been in good shape if they stopped the game in the third quarter he said "I should have waited a little longer to put in some of our youngsters in the game" Ford cited the two-point tries that failed as the difference "If they had made one of them it would have put a different light on the game" This is the way the game turned in the final 8 minutes after the safety with 13:05 left gave Clemson its 35-7 bulge: Deacon freshman cornerback Pierre Brown blocked a Clemson kick at the Tiger 19 and five plays later Venuto hit Duckett with a 6-yard touchdown pass making it 35-14 At 5:14 after several Clemson pass interference penalties a a6 444i 0 WWW 4K4' Tech Running Back Ronny --rff77 -4a t1 v' 4-7 VWS'34 t115 z74 uy tiLLINN HOLLINS
