Chris Evert Lloyd played her kind of tennis Saturday afternoon wearing down Hana Mandlikova and capturing her fifth US Open tennis championship 5-7 6-1 6-1 Her victory was overshadowed later in the evening by the final semifinal in which second-seeded John McEnroe edged third-seeded Jimmy Connors 6-4 5-7 0-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) McEnroe faces Bjorn Borg a 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-1 victor over John Kriek in finals Evert championship was her first with her father Jimmy who introduced her to tennis 20 years ago in attendance The McEnroe-Connors match took more than three hours McEnroe swept past Connors and the fourth set and appeared headed toward a repeat berth in the finals where he defeated Vitas Ge-rulaitis for the title a year ago He built a 5-3 lead in the final set but Connors rallied and won the next three games McEnroe tied the match 6-6 forcing a final tiebreaker McEnroe won the first two points of tually wore down her foe In their previous three matches all this summer Evert Lloyd 25 beat Mandlikova 18 in three sets I get tougher or she lets me off the hook" Evert Lloyd said I always pull it out In my mind even after I lost the first set it was hard to believe that Hana could keep up that kind of tennis She was brilliant" Mandlikova aware that she could not match strokes with Evert Lloyd from the baseline rushed to the net at every opportunity The tactic worked well in the first set when she won five of the last six games and broke Evert serve without losing a point But Evert Lloyd third-seeded in the tournament behind Tracy Austin and Martina Navratilova broke back at the start of the second set and began to score consistently with passing shots attacking game fell apart as she commited frequent unforced errors on her approaches and her volleys Since 1971 when Evert Lloyd made her US Open debut as an amateur she See EVERT LLOYD Page 10C Col 2 the tiebreaker then Connors closed to 2-1 McEnroe then ran off a string of four points but Connors won both points of his service staying alive Connors hit long on next serve ending the match Evert Lloyd's father showed much more emotion than did his daughter after the singles title match In the back of an interview room Jimmy Evert sat with his wife Colette and cried A few feet away Chris told reporters would have been very frustrating if I ended my career and my father had never seen me win a As for herself Evert Lloyd said shows it (emotion) differently not going to come in here and make a fool of myself When I lose matches I try not to show that disappointed When I leave here with my family then show it" That lack of emotion was much like her play against Mandlikova and the day before when she defeated Tracy Austin in a three-set semifinal Evert Lloyd was patient precise even machine-like Like in match she was outplayed in the first set but even UPI Photo Evert Llo)d Shows US Open Trophy championship was 5th for her East Carolina Rips Duke 35-10 Deacons By WHITEY KELLEY Observer Sports Editor SALEM Ground oriented Virginia Tech struck for two second-half touchdowns through the air stunning Wake Forest 16-7 Saturday in their regionally televised college football opener Both scoring bolts went to wingback Sidney Snell a 6-foot' 208-pound target The first from starting quarterback Steve Casey covered 28 yards with 11:27 remaining in the third quarter and it staked VPI to a 9-7 lead it never relinquished In the fourth quarter after Casey was knocked out of action near the close of the third quarter when he was tackled hard reserve quarterback Jeff Bolton came in to cause the Deacons just as much mischief He moved Tech 47 yards in eight plays for the final score a 24-yarder to Snell with 9:44 left in the game did a great job for them coming in and moving the team the way he did when Casey got Wake Forest coach John Mackovic said got to give him and Snell major share of the credit for their victory did not run or throw the ball very well and We were unable to make the big play when we needed it Virginia Tech on the other hand did make the big play and that was the difference in the football continued Mackovic The Virginia Tech defense dropping off as many as six and seven deep defenders to cover Jay receivers had considerable success at stopping the Deacon aerial game Venuto though showing no ill effects of offseason right elbow surgery completed only 12 of 30 passes The Virginia Tech rush also sacked him seven times even though only three or four linemen were in the rush pattern my arm felt good throwing the ball but we need more work on our Venuto reasoned He recalled that the same thing happpened last year in the Wake Forest opener that he was only 12 of 36 against Applal-chian But on that occasion the Deacons won Bolton showed a lot of poise coming into the game in that said Virginia Tech coach Bill Dooley his touchdown pass to Sydney Snell he could have rushed it and thrown a bad pass But he just waited and waited and threw the ball perfectly after Sydney had broken On role in the victory Mackovic added made a couple of great catches and runs that really hurt us But I think their backup quarterback (Bolton) did a good job of coming in when Casey came out give him more credit than Wake Forest took a 7-3 half- See VIRGINIA Page 6C Col 4 By BOB QUINCY Observer Stiff Writer DURHAM East Carolina not
