if he could then lit one He was born in the United States of French parents (his father was with the United Nations) but was educated in Geneva and speaks with a French accent He is of average height and is almost slight He is Christopher Lambert Tarzan in "Greystoke" (opening Friday at Capri and SduthPark) and he seems a most unlikely choice for the role Off camera that is On camera it is a different story Mr Lambert won the role after he tested in Paris where director Hugh Hudson ("Chariots of Fire") was interviewing actors for his film one that goes back to the first "Tarzan" book by Edgar Rice Burroughs Mr Lambert had done two French films but both Were minor "I was a gangster in them" he said "In France you either play a gangster or a cop" He thinks he won the role in "Greystoke" because Mr Hudson wanted "somebody who was 'Tarzan1 in definition and not in muscle tone He had to be quick He had to be somebody who was physically strong with long muscles 'Tarzan' grew up with apes and his muscles should be similar to those of apes Apes are incredibly strong but their muscles are long" tf) After he won the role Mr Lambert went into a period of intense training For six months he worked with live apes and men in ape suits He also learned to swing on ropes and do at least two lines of dialogue without accent When Tarzan returns to his ancestral estate in Scotland Mr Lambert as the ape man is required to mimic several guests at a dinner his grandfather has arranged Elsewhere Mr Lambert speaks with some accent but that is what Mr Hudson wanted "It was important to Hudson that I have a French accent" he said "In the book Tarzan learns English from a Frenchman In the movie he is a Belgian but he is a French-speaking Belgian" Mr Lambert had not read any of the Tarzan books before he did the film and he had seen only one "Tarzan" movie He forgets which one it was "I did not even read the comic strip" he said He isn't afraid he will be typed by the film "It takes place both in the jungle and in Scotland so if I am going to be typed it can be either as an ape man or a gentleman" he said He was very careful when he trained with the real apes "I wasn't afraid but you must show them respect" he said "You must also be very careful with them They are playful at times destructive at others They have the intelligence of a 2-year-old child They may be tranquil one moment then T LIFE MOVIE GUIDE MOVIE REVIEWS THEATER HIKING DINING OUT THE ARTS CONCERT REVIEWS HOT TIPS : wild the next" He is 26 and has wanted to be an actor since he was 12 "I just love movies" he said "I love them because in two minutes you have reality It's a wonderful life If you take it with humor it's great" He realizes the film business is precarious When asked if be was afraid he might go the way of Sam Jones ("Flash Gordon") or Klinton Spilsbury ("The Lone Ranger") he said that could happen but he is going to keep his feet on the ground "It's a job like any other" he said He says he is not overly impressed with himself "I tell myself that you are not a film star just because you've done one movie Paul Newman is a star You are not a star until you have lasted 20 years" Oh yes the Tarzan yell This $27 million production is from Warner Bros so the MGM yell the one used by Johnny Weissmuller is not used in the film "There was never any question" Mr Lambert said "This is a different sound" He makes various jungle sounds at times during the film When be becomes enamored of Jane (Andie Mac Dowell) he growls "That's a leopard's growl" he said "That is not mine" Christopher Lambert stars as Tarzan in "Greystoke" Concert tour flow of creative juices keep Luther Vandross hopping By KATHY HAIGHT POPULAR MUSIC WRITER 0 t had been a week of unex- pected starts and stops and little sleep for soul-pop singer Luther Vandross whose latest LP "Busy Body" sits just below Michael Jackson's No 1 "Thriller" on Billboard's soul albums chart After a recent Sunday night show at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia Mr Vandross's tour bus broke down en route to New York causing a frustrating eight-hour delay at an all-night NC truck stop to tackle problems with the oil filter "We woke up and said 'Where are we?' thinking we would be in Jersey" Mr Vandross said last week his voice soft and easygoing at the other end of the phone "But we were nine miles out of Fayetteville" The singer made it home to his Manhattan condominium at 4 am Tuesday By noon he was in the recording studio doing the final mixing and overdubbing on a cut from Teddy Pendergrass's new album — the Philadelphia singer's first studio LP since an auto accident in 1982 left him partially paralyzed After two days in the studio Mr Vandross was back on the road Friday he brings his resonant tenor voice and smooth emotion ally vulnerable style to the Charlotte Coliseum for an 8 pm performance with DeBarge and The Deele Both groups have songs ! bulleting up Billboard's soul sin-: gles chart behind Mr Vandross's No 22 medley of Leon Russell's' "Superstar" and Stevie Wonder's' "Until You Come Back To Me" "I'm ready to have some time off" the 32-year-old vocalist' songwriter and producer explained speaking from a tour stop in Merrillville Ind But with six weeks of touring left and his creative juices already bubbling with thoughts of a new LP the title of Mr Vandross's latest release seems a more apt de-Continued on Page 3D Col 1 &2: - Pouly-faced Duran Duran puts romance back into rock music By YARDENA ARAR ASSOCIATED PRESS He's slight has French accent — but no ye OS ANGELES — They're filling huge arenas with screaming fans their "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" LP is in the Top 10 and their pouty faces peer from teen fan magazines everywhere To some the commotion surrounding Duran Duran's current US tour recalls Beatlemania of two decades ago and the band has been jokingly dubbed the Fab Five If rock critics wrinkle their noses at the band's techno-pop lead singer and songwriter Simon Le Bon couldn't care less "I think critics in the music business are different from theater critics" he said recently settling into a chair in his Westwood hotel suite "They don't have that much power" But there is a compelling media force behind Duran Duran and it can be summed up in three letters: MTV — Music Television Scarcely noticed by the media in two previous visits to the United States Duran Duran saw its following mushroom slowly but surely after Warner-Amex's cable rock video channel began airing what at the time were distinctive videos In "Hungry Like a Wolf" the strapping blond Mr Le Bon donned pith helmet and khakis to chase a maiden through jungles and bazaars of Sri Lanka "Girls on Film" is a salute to the soft-porn film industry "Save a Prayer" also shot in Sri Lanka is a romantic travelogue The response to the videos is credited with convincing radio to start playing the band's "Rio" LP which became a best-seller six months after its release Mr Le Bon said the band set out to make waves with video after making a modest splash in Britain's New Romantic movement which brought costumes and dance music back into style after punk rock's grim reign Mr Le Bon at 25 the band's oldest member recalls meeting with managers Paul and Michael Berrow and fellow band members Roger Taylor Andy Taylor John Taylor (none related) and Nick Rhodes "We were sitting and talking and saying 'Look we need something like Pink Floyd had stereo' They had this new device at their fingertips and they were the first to really use it to its full extent "And we thought the same thing was happening in video — that so far you've got this medium and all that people were doing with it was either recorded live shows or showing bits of old black-and-white silent movies or cartoons which have nothing to do with music "Nobody had ever really taken: a band out into a setting out into anywhere exotic or exciting — a mountain or under a waterfall And we thought let us go let us be the first people to do it" Mr Le Bon acknowledges "Rio" was bound to attract the adolescent crowd But he says "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" has established Duran Duran as more than a teen band When the album was finished he said the group thought it had "blown it We thought we've lost all the kids now — we've come out with something which is much too obscure for them" he said "And look what is happening" he said "We're starting to do the kind of thing which we really intended to do in the first place which was to get hold of an audience and to take it with us and to actually develop musically and develop our audiences' taste as well" Duran Duran will play at the Greensboro Coliseum Friday The concert is sold out SECTION D I : : ' :: '1 - :
