victory over Wake Forest and coach John Mackovic For Mackovic an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator under Young at Purdue last season it looked like a happy "homecoming" when halfback James Mc Dougeld scampered nine yards around right end for a Wake Forest touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter The score was set up by a fumble recovery at the Purdue 30 by Donnie Jackson Steve Schonert had to try the conversion twice because of an offsides penalty against the Deacons but his conversion kick gave Wake Forest a 7-6 lead The game which was expected to be a pasing show turned Into a defensive battle and it appeared that 7-6 margin might stand up After the kickoff Purdue drove from its own 20 to a third-andgoal at the Deacon 10 hut Wake's George Ervin intercepted a pass in the end zone However Wake Forest was unable to move the ball After the punt the Boilermakers drove from their 38 to the end zone in eight plays with tailback Russell Pope running the final two yards A Mark Herrmann-to-Bart Burrell two-point conversion pass rounded out the scoring Wake Forest dropped to 1-4 for the season with a home game against North Carolina coming up Saturilay Pt6lue built its early 6-0 lead on pair of Scott Sovereen field That's the ball game folks Exactly 25 seconds after the Wolf-pack cut the margin to three points it was Maryland 24 State 7 "We work a lot On our kicking what jarred the bail loose though someone else told me I managed to kick the ball" The result leaves Maryland with a nine-game winning streak spanning two seasons and a howl victory The Terps (5-0 20
