16A THE CHARIMTE onsrRvER Turs July 4 1978 WSOC May Make 'Soap Permanent It now appears that come September "Soap" will be seen in prime time in the Charlotte area For one thing the once-controversial ABC series has been cleaned up since its initial episode kicked up a storm of protest last fall among people who thought it was too sexy (Actually it was too shoddy but that's beside the point) For another thing WCCB (channel 18) which refused to air the series during the recently con 1471 eluded 1977-78 -44 television season '1! is no longer Charlotte's ABC f ' affiliate WSOC i' y P'01 ' (channel 9) is i 7 For the past 1 two Saturdays : kt:-- I WSOC has car- :'"i- 411' ried two hour et "1 late -night broad- L4Ala Air casts of "Soap" - reruns to let Callaghan WSOC viewers catch up with "Soap" episodes ABC is rerunning Mondays and Tuesdays at 11:30 pm this sum mer The station also wanted to see how Charlotte-area folks would react to the series WSOC Station Manager Jack Callaghan recalls that the first Saturday night of reruns triggered 33 calls — enough to make him tremble until he learned that 31 of the calls were protesting the station's premption of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" With only two calls complaining about "Soap" and with no additional complaints received since last Saturday's second batch of reruns Callaghan thinks WSOC probably will decide to pick up the series next fall when it returns to prime time for its second season - - -WCCB newsmen Bob Keefer and :im Lloyd have been given the heave-ho Seems they didn't fit into Channel I8's plans now that the station is no longer affiliated WEDNESDAY JULY 5 ART at KPC 1 FOR INFORMATION r Route 29 Concord TVRadio )Ron Alridge with a network and therefore is under less pressure to broadcast news Mike Kassner vice president of Bahakel Broadcasting which owns WCCB said the axed staffers would be given primary consider ation for any suitable jobs that might open at other Bahakel stations He said the cutbacks were necessary because WCCB plans to concentrate on national not local news Keefer 29 and the father of two says he has no job prospects In sight Lloyd couldn't be reached for comment Both men will get severance pay You may recall that I recently predicted "drastic cutbacks" in WCCB's news staff You may also recall that the prediction prompted a heated written denial (published in this column) from Kassner Kassner says there are now four persons in the station's news department I hear that all but news director Tony Alexi have been assigned additional non-news duties Bob Schellenberg the WBTV sportscaster who used to drive me crazy with his unending use of overheated verbs (as in "Boston BOMBARDED New York") is taking a job with WCCB's sales department He wants to get into management and reasons properly that the sales route is the way to go Here's hoping Bob KILLS 'cm really BULLDOZES the competition SKYROCKETS to the top Schellenberg -- thankfully — quit using his high-voltage verbs a few months back) - - WE'RE BURSTING lid eA c c 'WITH GOOD NEWS!
