handle it" he said "Actually 29 or 30 exhibition games are too many I don't even like the camp games we've been playing since the strike It's tough to get up for them you're playing against your own Continued from Page 7A summers of 1972-73-74 in Ashe-ville where his dad Cal Ripken Sr managed the Tourists Ashe-ville was Baltimore's Southern League affiliate before Crockett Promotions Inc bought the franchise and moved the ballclub here in 1976 That was the same season the elder Ripken became a coach on Earl Weaver's staff in Baltimore That tie-in became professionally important in the spring of 1977 when Cal Ripken was having a hilarious junior year at Aberdeen High 35 miles north of Baltimore Aberdeen is not In a prime talent area for baseball scouts but Orioles' brass knew of the youngster because of the father's bragging So Ripken was invited to a high school tryout at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium and caused some eyes to bulge with the four balls he hit over the fence The next year the Orioles drafted him fourth in the amateur free agent draft as a shortstoppitcher (he had 100 strikeouts in 59 innings his senior year) He went into infield work he says because if pitching hadn't panned out he would have been away from hitting too long to return The switch from short to third came in midseason last year when Miami's third baseman got hurt About the time he was learning the term "hot corner" somebody hit a shot that kicked off the lip of the infield grass and cranked him in the throat He lived he said and did OK he said and when he got acclimated his bosses decided they liked him better at third "Now that I've played there a while I like it better too" he said "One thing you can knock a ball down at third and still have time to throw the batter out At shortstop if you don't make the play cleanly you don't have a play" Besides that he's been a little scatter-armed which perhaps is why Baltimore nudged him off the mound But this is a new dawn and a
