"I think that either LSU or Southern California (which tied Nebraska) is the best They're about on a par Fine football teams" Devaney savored the thought when he was reminded (as if he had to be) that the Huskers scored two touchdowns on LSU by rushing as many as Tiger opponents got on the ground all season "Our game plan was to run on them when we got down near the goal We've got a big strong line and we've got big powerful backs I thought we could run on them I think we can run on anybody" HE FELT the Huskers lost momentum after striking for 10 points within a 34-second span late in the first quarter "We sort of dominated the first quarter then lost the ball on a fumble and an interception LSU had made mistakes early and we began making mistakes in that second quarter" Devaney paused to try and wring out his Nebraska-red coat He sighed "We sure gave LSU a lot of opportunities to catch us in that last quarter We were very kind about giving them chances to beat us "But they didn't beat us And nobody else did" Devaney heard one of his athletes yell "Get N1xon on the phone" and smiled like he thought it was a good idea i 3 44 ''''V41PaSOP15e5T" 4i4AS 0 1 itt lid 1 AAk It 1114 --'11)40CW-- Curd Gets Nebraska-Notre Dame Hassle All-City Another Case for Playoffs QB Baker Colonels Floridians Square Off SATURDAY'S RESULTS California at Montreal incomplete Detroit at Toronto incomplete New York at Pittsburgh incomplete St Louis at Vancouver incomplete Chicago at Philadelphia incomplete Minnesota at Los Angeles incomplete FRIDAY'S RESULT Boston 9 Buffalo a TODAY'S GAMES Montreal at New York Boston at Philadelphia Caifornia at Detroit Chicago at Buffalo St Louis at Los Angeles Edwin Pope i tfr ol 16! But that is how the football championship will be settled And that is why college football needs a playoff system to determine a champion THERE are tons of drawbacks to such playoffs so many that the idea probably never will be approved They would further extend a long season They would foul up the bowls because only one bowl could wind up with that final title game and all the others would be pouting And who finally would choose say the eight teams in those playoffs? Would each conference champion qualify and what if the whole conference happened to have a lousy year? And how do you figure out the representatives from the independents? Still it is incontestable that college football needs a playoff to stand off the monster competitor that grows more monstrous each year pro football PRO FOOTBALL is dynamite It has several advantages over college football but one that overrides all others identification You finally develop a favorite player in college and whoosh! he's gone Where has he gone? Why to the pros of course College attendance is increasing Yet in many cases this is simply a matter of rising population and constant jumps in the numbers of students and alum 37th Orange Bowl Classic was I think made by Bill Bondurant sports editor of the Ft Lauderdale News As we left the Orange Bowl around midnight Bondurant said: "The interest in this game was generated from without not from within" Remember now that this was a match-up of the third and fifth-ranked teams TEXAS and Notre Dame was a natural because of the national character of the institutions Ohio State and Stanford commanded appeal because of the-Buckeye tradition and the presence among the Indians of a Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett But who could get interested in Tennessee and Air Force? It proved nothing Zilch That's it in the altogether Unless by an incredible stroke of luck some bowl can come up with two opponents rated 1-2 nationally and far ahead of other team there is no dreaming way to prove College Friday as?
