Preweatatioa Catkoliei Rev. Fr George A. Baumer; 6, 7:80, 9 and 10:30 a. masaea; the Blessed for the new conscript army, It is highly desirable, and even may be eald to be necessary to have an X-ray plate of the chest taken in order to determine whether or not there is tuberculosis. Press dispatches tell us that the General Electric X-ray Corp.

bM been commissioned by the department to prepare a candid camera which will make small X-ray photographs during physical examinations for the draft; the plates will be about four by five inches. The public may wish to understand why such an apparently ex pensive method is necessary. In the firat place. It is not particularly expensive. In this modern way of doing it, the four by five plate film is arranged on an X-ray machine much like the film on a camera, and whkh costa about 10 cents.

Best Method These films are unquestionably the best method of deleting and eliminating cases of tuberculosis In the routine examination of large groups of people. Before the days of the X-ray we developed a fairly able technic by the use of the stethoscope. In the hands of those who are very skillful this will uncover many cases but the percentage of error la about 25 percent In group examinations even when performed by the most skillful and expert enced men. The us of the X-ray fluoroioope, that is to say, the screen which la ased without taking a permanent photographic plate, shows an error of about 13 percent as against the plate method. The X-ray plate detects all kinds of closed and inactive, and after this plate is examined other examinations will have to be made to see whether the case is active or Inactive.

Cost Of Disease In Last War To come down to the question of the ultimate cost, it can be said that the elimination of every active case of tuberculosis in drafted men would result in the saving of untold millions of dollars. The figures from the last war are staggering. Men were allowed to be Inducted Into the army with active tuberculosii. In the course of time they got sick and there was no way to prove they did not acquire the tuberculosis In service. Under any circumstances, since the government accepted them, the government was liable for compensation and for care.

The operating cost of tuberculosis hospitals was sometimes, as In the year 1926, nearly In 1940, 20 years after the war was over, it was over In 1922 there were over 10,000 tuberculous veterans In hospitals at the end of the fiscal year. In 1939 there were nearly 6,000. It Is estimated that the total cost of tuberculosis during and after the World war In compensation, hospitalization, Insurance and vocational training has been 1960,000,000. VOTINE REBISTRATION EXPENSE SET AT $723 1940 Cost Certified Against Next Tax Settlement Registration of Bast Liverpool voters for the 1940 primary and general elections cost the city 9723.62, Clerk Frank R. of the county election board said today.

The charge was certified Friday to county auditor Ross Tisher to be charged back against the next tax aettlement. It includes 1348.87 for the preparation of registration lists that are posted in each precinct, and smaller amounts for poll lists, registration cards and other aup- pliea and incidental services. A saving of at least 100 percent has been made in the last few years for printing the poll lists, which now are made up In the election board office Instead of being turned over to one of the job printers. The sheets are printed on a rotary duplicator, which has paid for Itself several times, Mr. said.

The machine also Is used for preparing form letters of instruction to clerks and Judges. Aside from the saving in printing costa, use of the duplicator eliminates the cost of clerical services for preparing copy, Mr. said.
