Company gave a very pleasing variety entertain ment It opened with a clever marionette show which created much laughter The Donnells are good character actors but they should not attempt to siug Their voices are squeaky and untrained but this is the case with most variety performers The dancing of Kate Donnell was about the best that has ever been seen in Sacramento and she received a number of en-oores The Miltou Sisters were very tiresome when they attempted to sing but when they danced the audience was all attention for the young women throw their limbs about in a reckless yet graceful style Many of their were new and their costuming was beautiful The Avons are excellent acrobats Duncan who has been seen in Sacramento before gave a tine exhibition of his powers as a ventriloquist and the Pylades character mimics made up well as a number of noted soldiers statesmen and authors of this country and Europe but their imitations of well-known Californians did not take well It required considerable imagination to help the spectator in believing that he was looking at the original characters The best feature of the show was the performance of Kellar who has been paralyzed in the lower limbs and walks upon his hands His muscles are wonderfully developed and he is able to perform astounding feats of strength Taken as a whole Leavitt has a high-clasa variety show that gives much satisfaction Another performance will be given this evening The members of the McNeill Club well satisfied by the musical success attained by their concerts during the past season have put their hands into their pockets to make up the deficiency caused by furnishing entertainment and attractions of a first-class nature to the Sacramento public and have concluded to give during 1889 another season of four concerts in no way inferior to their predecessors The first concert will take place toward the end of February The prospectus announces that during 188!) associate members will be assured reserved seats in Buch part of the house as their tickets call for if applied for by mail or otherwise at any tipie before 7:30 of the evening of eh concert The public are awakening to the fact that the very best place in the Metropolitan Theater to enjoy a concert is in the family circle upstairs and the club finds a demand for seats there It has accordingly issued season membership tickets entitling to two reserves for this part of the house at $4 The family circle has opera chairs similar to those in the firm circle and parquet and will be well lighted and warmed and provided with ushers at each concert The last entertainment given by the club was so well received by the public that there is no doubt that the membership list will readily till Professor McKeown had a large audience at his horse-training exhibition at Armory Hall last night His power over the animal is truly wonderful One wild liorse the other night was so trained in a few goura to obey every command of the trainer The entertainment is well worth going to see and would prove instructive to anybody having anything to do with horses Courage and Patience Life Is sad because we know it Death because -we Urerntliillnu lb Gene or Poor Inlorliniate In a dark and filthy court back of an I-strfeet Chinese establishment might have been seen the other night a sight that for utter degradation surpasses anything that might be conjectured even in that fountain of corruption the Motgolian quarter Six miserable men whose skin indicated that they belonged to the Caucasian race were crouched together by a dim candle light The whole gang were undressed as to the nether portions of them and the portions of their bodies thus exposed were literally covered witli small spots offensively suggestive of some one of the loathsome diseases that all men shun The faces of the unfortunate creatures were pale and haggard and altogether they miserable a lot of mortals as ever held on to the thread of life long after their days of usefulness had passed and even an excuse for existence had ceased to exist One of the feeble creatures was in the act of injectiug something through a small syringe into the flesh of another just above tho knee joint Tbe substance was mor phine and the miserable creatures in the gang were victims of the deadly morphine habit HOW THE OPERATE Among themselves people who plnne by the hypodermic process known "hurmo TUm inlnin mor- are known as The injection process is simple euough A quantity of the grayish-white substance is dissolved in a spoon partly filled with water This is then held over a candle until it is of about the temperature of blood in its normal condition The solution is then ready fur the syringe would surprise you to know of people who belong to the said a druggist to a Bek reporter beastly practice is by no means confined to the degraded men and women who get into the Police Court wonderful bow the habit grows These people grow so accustomed to using morphine that they can take an incredibly large quantity without fatal injury I have one customer who buys four bits worth every day That means just (10 grains or enough to kill GO men not accustomed to its use But this man disposes of that quantity every day of jps life and yet he lives Others have nofT got ao far along as tht but they often take as much at a dose as would kill a score of people When one gets to using the drug habitually it is impossible to break off the habit The most terrible torture you can inflict on such a man or woman is to deprive them of their morphine dose I have kuown men in well to do circumstances when dragged down and bankrupted through long use of the drug to beg like hungry beggars for just oue dose The morphine fiend will do anything to get money to satisfy his appetite He seems absolutely to lose his self-respect and becomes utterly degraded Nothing is too low for him His senses become blinded he is Btupid debased beyond description and abandoned above all power to save him Life is but a season of yearning fora happiness that only comes when his blood courses with the impulses of the drug and his poisoned brain is delirious with the dangerous brutal joy it HUSTLING FOR A SHOT The gang of miserables who have acquired the terrible habit have a hard time to get money enough to buy as they call a morphine injection Ten cents is enough to buy but even this trifle is often beyond the reach of the most of them They resort to the lowest and most menial means to get the poor pittance of a dime They can be seen nosing almost like swine along the street gutters cr tramping through ordorous alleys in search of junk or old rags When a coal train is unloading the fiends reap a harvest gathering up the lumps that drop from the cars and carts and selling the accumulations to poor people for fifteen or twenty cents a sack Whatever sleep the unfortunates receive is found the slums of Chinatown or over the north levee in a few abandoned cabins OPIUM UNFASHIONABLE It is said that the opium habit is on the decline being superceded by the more deadly use of morphine Indeed the raoruhine entertain a species of contempt for the man who smokes opium and will not allow him a seat in their select circles but a Chinaman would smoke said a in tbe Police Court the other day llis eyes were distended and glared wildly from the effects of the drug but he kept his caBte just the same and declined to share his degradation with the inferior ruin of the opium fiend COCAINE COMING INTO USB As opium is being supetceded by morphine so the latter is giving way to that more ruinous drug cocaine It is just as if science were assisting the weaker of humanity down the grade faster and faster and faster Morphine facilitates the fall faster than opium but cocaine is even swifter still in its destructiveness It not only elates but crazes the user and makes his progress to misery and then to death swift and terrible Cocaine is fast becoming the favorite dissipation with many people The transition from morphine to its more ruinous ally is natural and easy Various means have been suggested to make it difficult for the wretches to get their drugs but none seem practicable One method proposed is to tax the drugs until the price of them is raised beyond the reach of ordinary people But while remedies are being discussed the awful evils are increasing and the victims are orowding the hospitals and jails PLACER IN SAN FRANCISCO Crowds Co to See the Very Attractive Exhibition Tim Placer exhibit which was opened in San Francisco at 123 Geary street last Thursday is proving a splendid success The exhibit is located in the Star King building in a fine front window with twenty feet front of plate glass and consists not only of oranges apples pears and numerous varieties of dried fruits but also of the minerals with which the Placer hills abound The display was visited by 6500 people on Thursday and Friday and the crowds keep increasing One third of the callers yesterday were Eastern people mainly from 'Massachusetts New York and Illinois These people like many others from the East were imbued with the delusion that Northern California 11 a frozen region like the land they had left behind There amazement al the revelations of the exhibit was freely expressed and many of them were induced by what they saw to make a visit to this section Whitney of Rocklin who owns the Starr King Building is in Maine A telegraph offer was sent him of $200 a week for the use of a store in the building He replied tendering the use of the store free and further contributing $200 towards the exhibition The exhibit will be continued a week or ten days longer and will then be turned over the State Board of trade Jacob Links
