English snipe having been bagged on a certain marsh a few unles from this city by a couple of well-known sportsmen It ia to be hoped that these birds will do better by onr shooters this season than they did last The neighborhoods of Rocklin and Lincoln are said to contain plenty of quail but as a general thing our shooters are averse to the hard work oonseqnent upon banting the cauniug eraatures and are lying low for the coming of the ducks Crowds of persona went from this city last Sunday to Fishermen's Lake to enjoy a fishing and recreation We are told that the banka were almost covered Porter Each man selected his ground and waa pledged to kill game only between certain hours and was bound by his word to purchase from bo one After the shoot was over the men returned to Watsonville and the game waa 'onntcd at the Mansion House The fol-wing were the points agreed upon: Quail 5 dove 3 rabbit 5 field hare 10 snipe 10 Points for other game were agreed upon but we give the points only for the varieties of game brought in" The match waa won by side by a score of 1032 to 956 points Thirteen men shot altogether and the average to the man waa l-'S poiuta equivalent on a quail basis to SO1 quail to the man This average ia mi excellent one when it ia considered that not a professional hunter waa on either side and that each one had had no practice for months The following are the scores in points: Besse's side Captain Htewart 353 Brewington 245 Mark Hudson 195 1) Aldrich 109 Lease 105 8 Maulbatch 25 Porter's Manuel Arano 295 Radcliff 179 John Cole-bower 165 Bib Fletcher 128 Porter 85 Johnson 65 Beckham 50 Some of the bent shots made low scores especially on aide owing te the fact that they hunted on poor ground The boat scores on quail were made by Htewart 61 Arano 57 Hrewingtou 45 After the result was known the contesting sides sat down to an elegant supper which had been prepared for them at the Mansion House Another shoot will probably occur shortly RIFLE SHOOTTSQ EXTRAORDINARY Alt the scores at long rango were beaten by Wm Gerrish at the Walnut Hill competition Boston bept 21st forty-three oonseentive beiDg recorded one miss and another at 800 900 and 1000 yards 15 shots at each range The score is a remarkable one and places Mr at tbe very head of the marksmen of the world Tho weather was none too favorable The atmosphere was fairly clear and a gray light prevailed Th spectators were numerous ptd the excitement intense as one bull's-eye after an other was recorded The shells used by Mr Gerrish were tilled before he went to England last May and brought back by him which explodes the theory of some rillemen that shells which have been filled for a long time are unreliable Huhjoined a a summary of the shooting: Gerrish: 800 A 5-7 910 5 BOH SHY TOURNAMENT IN SACRAMENTO Speaking of the late archery meeting ifi this oity during Fair week the Han Francisco Olympian says Following the custom started at the Fair last year a number of arohers met at Sacramento September 23d and 24th and had a session This year tbare was bo club shooting ami many archers who were at the previous meeting alto failed to appear Home new shooters were on hand however though failing to finish the shooting On this account the oorss at tha Double York partly shot by Messrs White and Yorke are omitted Loftss made his first effort at the York round this match and his score of 210 was very good If he keeps on in proportion he will be apt to make it lively for most of them in another year While tho meeting waa hastily gotten up and in consequence rather informal the visiting archers enjoyed thomsolrea immensely and hope for a repetition another year Mr Parks of the new club lately organised at Gold Hill Nev was among the visitors but did not shoot amusing himself in keeping soorea and watching the Lone Archer" (as well as some others) tumble Jno 0 Cadmsn captured first in both the matches he shot and hereafter the medala will grace the range of the A O'a in this city to the loss of Granite Hill The visiting archers are indebted to White and others for numerous attentions and a very pleasant time and will not toon forget their trip Another year we hope to meet Messrs White Yorke aud Ball lor a tussle at the Double York and regret business engagements preventing it this time No more beautiful place could have been selected for the meeting than that obosen and the beauty of the scene at the olese will long be remembered by those fortunate enough to be Hays the Pacifio Life on the same subject: "To say that the tournament was a suoresi would he stating the case very mildly It was a grand success not so muoh in point of numbers as iu the absolute enjoyment ef the sport The Sacramento range ii Capitol Park enuld not be finer The most beautiful lawn 1 ever saw perfectly level shaded on either side by trees neither too large nor too small and plenty of room for spectators on tho terraces at one side and back of the stand The gardner was tbonghtfnl enough to have the grass cut short so there was no difficulty in retrieving arrows All our ranges either in Han Francisco or Oakland are very poor and iusigniticaut affairs when compared with Capitol Park Those who were fortunate enough'to participate will inwardly think of big words when they go to practice at the dusty tar weedy and inaccessible Adams Point range in Oakland or the sandy uneven and uninteresting range at Gate Garden Han Francisco But then gentlemen we help thess things so must put up with them and make the best of our surroundings Every one voted the Sacramento boys and girls tramps I say girls although many of them are married ladies for we all felt young and bad good a time as any children could have Courteous kind and even oonsiderate enough to 1st the Han Franciscans take away both medals and all the prises save one or two of lesser importance Mr Loftus of Hacramento is a genius in hi way He is an archer too and a good one The Bar archers miy well look out when Ur Loftus ia a contestant for he is a dangerous man with the IiODg Bow Practice a little more and don't express yourself quite so freely as to what yon can do sad you will succeed better After a dosen arrows had been shot at 60 yards we beard Mr Loftus tell one of his friends that he could outshoot the whole crowd of duffers easily He was right he did outshoot the duffers but be took them all for duffers and waa mistaken His style of holding a bow could be improved and now is the time to do it At this time we will speak of Mr shooting or rather his style of hooting as exceptionally g'xxi He hold his bow strong aud firm and only deliver his arrow when be is sura of bis sim Ne predict that Mr Yorke will rapidly to the front rank of archers by the time the next tournament taxes place It perhaps would be better to use tutth eyes and not shut one in shooting We are sorry that Mr Yorke could not spire time to finish his Double York Hound for we should be well pleased to have had hi core to compare with what be does in future Mr Collins is a steady man with a bow All we oan aay of him is that with more Sractice at the long ranges he will no oubt become
