It has been storming hard in Nevada with snow and rain and times are get ting rough for the prosjiectors EXFBEMIANA Under a quite prominent caption of The Bee and our the Marysville Express in its issue of yesterday has a long and varied article on this and several other matters On Friday hut that paper intimated that General lee in surrendering to Grant had sold out Davis and the entire Confederacy for his own personal safety and advantage Coming from such a source we thought the charge a very singular one and asked the Express to make public all it knew about the matter Instead of doing so however either through design or misapprehension that journal undertakes to tell all it does not know which iS a work of much greater magnitude than we had any intention of imposing upon it The Bek said it was generally supposed that Lee surrendered because he was beaten into it The Express says he was not and points first to this very word and second to Lees own declaration before the surrender that he was not whipped to prove its assertion Satisfactory proof to that paper perhaps but 1 not to the public It repeats the charge that Lee treated with the enemy capitulated for a consideration gave up his sword and laid down his arms for an The same remark will of course apply with equal truth to Johnston and other rebel Generals who very gladly accepted the terms accorded to Lee Even Da is surrendered for a personal safety says this now sanguinary minded editor could have made a desperate So could Davis His captors were few and he hail with him many of his retainers members of his and also Mrs Davis lie didn't though The Express says the Bek once made an open confession that loyalty The Bek did once bait a paragraph with the caption Ijoyalty and it was amusing to see the avidity with which the Express Mountain Democrat and other gudgeons swallowed loyalty pays thought they here goes for The point hidden by the bait was this Loyalty is truth truth pays Just as we seek to instil a moral principle into some minds by representing honesty as the best jxilict" When the trick was discovered there were some rye faces and many unkind things were said of the Bek We still think and as a companion for that declaration would also state our belief that the wages of sin are For the information of the Express it may be necessary to state that the idea conveyed in the words last quoted is not original with the Bee One of the quaintest bits of humor iu the entire budget is this An independent un-trammeled paper like the The announcement of Mrs Davis confinement must prove new and interesting information for that acquaintances as well as for community at large Ever since her husban returned her clothes the public have supposed she was at perfect lilierty to go ont whenever and wherever it pleased her Ijpe is a gentleman a soldier a said the Express Yet according to that pajxr lie has been guilty of the basest treachery we grant all the Express asserts and admit Lee to be the villain it essays to paint him it affords a palpable illustra tion of the debasing effect of treason And if it thus effects even great minds is it matter of wonder that inferior intellects ui which the virus festers internally should manifest it by resorting to low and baseless insinuations when fair and open argument fails them Slightly at Variance TheGregon-ian prints with justifiable pride an ex tract from a letter of Mr Bowles -to the Springfield (Mass) Republican alluding to the observance of Sunday in Portland In this says the Oregonian our city on a Sunday presents an appearance very similar to a city on the Atlantic side Every church but one has its minister and regularly the pews of our meeting-houses are generally occupied Our numerous Sabbath-schools are well attended by the youth and quiet and order prevail Speculators and jobbers can here regain a renewal of strength by the rest and enjoyment of attendance one day in seveu at the sanctuary as well as elsewhere and if not spiritually be at least physically benefited by allowing their counting-houses to remain closed from Saturday until Immediately after we find in the same column a paragraph beginning as follows city jail is now nearly filled with drunken and disorderly persons Besides being too small for al I practical uses the jail is not adapted lv nA Vvia mniAH ft -ft the for which it is used The Old Apple Orchard A letter says Our old orchard is not what it used to be Many of the trees are dead and much of the land on which it stood has passed into other hands Never mind There are sunny memories connected with it that will keep bright long after the trees shall have No matter where the letter was written or whither sent or by whom or to whom It has direct reference to one particular and distinct orchard with an individuality of its own Yet how many memories of how many old apple orchards will this simple allusion conjure npin the minds of readers Who does not remember some old apple orchard with its green leaves and its fragrant blossoms and its golden fruit its stately columns its graceful sylvan arches its mossy carpet its delightful vistas and the welcome feathered tenants who took board and lodging there each Spring and Summer and always paid up with their notes And by the knew one of them to be protested save by the cat that prowling heartless old broker with apparently no other idea than the pound of flesh be the same more or less lay down the paper now and close your eyes and wander again through its mazy and shady paths as you did of yore with mother or sister or brother or sweetheart or schoolmate and then say if you would exchange it even for the garden of the Ilesperides! Those fruitful oves of memory are immortal and improve with age Even the old crab-tree with gnarled limb and stunted trunk now seems in its mossy robe as comely and graceful as the handsomest of modern trees And what crops of recollections they- bear ripe and mellow yet ever fresh Aud how kindly they take the grafting on their sturdy branches of nil manner of odd fancies and queer conceits! And then it is so convenient to pluck from the bending boughs such iruit as suits the taste or the momentary inood sweet or sour or bitter or pleasantly sub-acid In the generality of old orchards the bearers ofr bitter fruit are -not long-lived and the sweet predominates with just sufficient of the tart to prevent cloying Old orchards! interested in the well-being of the community of which we form a part and which is sustained only by our exertions and onr capital it might naturally be supposed that we would feel personally concerned in setting California the land of onr pride ami onr adoption in the best possible light before the World or at least that we would in the exercise of our power as public journalists refrain from the expression of sentiments calculated to alienate the affections of our fellow citizens or discourage them in their efforts to place the growing communities of this coast on an equal footing with the older sections of the Union If California had been for many years a member of the confederation without having in the meanwhile exhibited any of the evidences of progress which should be looked for in a State of which high things were expected a systematic course of abuse and depreciation might be held in some sense excusable but the truth is that since the hour whelk the national flag was first unfurled upon the hights of Yerba Buena she has exhibited more of the evidences of political and commercial greatness than any of her friendly rivals and as tangible proof has within a period of fifteen years showered into the lap of the nation an amount of wealth exceeding its ordinary revenues while continually petitioning Government for additional facilities such as would enable her indefinitely to increase that amount During all this time while business panics and financial troubles have been of incessant occurrence at the East Progress has been the watchword of our citizens and few of them that have not enjoyed re- peated opportunities of advancing their fortunes or earned an independent livelihood with less exertion than attends the same conditions of existence in other parts of the globe Living in the midst of a continual series of excitements consequent upon ever-recumpg mineral discoveries our minds inflamed by Aladdin visions of sudden fortunes the same stability was not to be expected in ns which characterizes society elsewhere and onr population owing solely to this cause has been Bubject to continual mutations losing at one door what it gained at another and sometimes as during the' past year appearing to fall below the average Impendent upon all these popular movements for its vitality and not having at hand those inexhaifstible foreign markets which sustain the Eastern seaports through all domestic vicissitudes the trade of California flourishes or is depressed according to the degree of suceess which attends the adventurous thousands engaged in the formation of new Territories beyond her limits If they are lucky in the attainment of their objects capital follows in their wake the channels of trade are revivified merchants are prosperous employment at remunerative prices is abundant and all participate in the common thrift If disappointment attends their efforts trade is for the time being at a stand still and complaint of hard times is universal To judge from the tenor of many of the articles in the journals published at the Hay this latter would appear to le the chronic condition of affairs in California Some writers viewing the whole field with a jaundiced eye occupy themselves in a ceaseless Warfare against society against the mines against the agricultural interest and even against that latest development of the natural resources the oil springs as persistently as though they were pak by the hour for their service and meant to leave the country as soon as the desired amount of injury was accomplished Even the climate according to these croakers has deteriorated and the inference is that the entire population shoult at shat np their shops abandon forge and factory desert the mines ant restore the country to the starveling races that once were sole inhabitants Yet it is beyond dispate that the State is intrinsically wealthier now than at any previous period The treasure shipments may not reach the enormous figures of the year preceding but on the other hand a much greater amount is added to tber estimates of the value of various kinds of property and sums retained for investment and the bulk of our people are occupied and com paratively content Some difficulty better understood in financial circles than among the masses prevents the circulation of money to that extent which is desirable to authorize the boast of flash as of vore but who with alt the facts before him can doubt that we are yet to realize the golden visions of our earlier dreams or that California is destined to become one the most prosperous of the bright sisterhood Drawing consolation from com par iso with the reverses which have so often beset the East we should argue rather that ours haa been with all drawbacks a favored State and take comfort in a hope that the happy re-action which has followed the war at the East may soon be felt as we firmly believe it will in the affairs of California Winter Fashions A
