Pennigar Football The bid was judged in large part by its failure to live up to the promises of a new stadium' Robbie in his public comments and his position in the owners meeting did little to change that perception matter what we the Dolphins Michael Robbie said before the Super Bowl vote has been done in Miami to show that the Super Bowl is That attitude probably was more damang-ing to chances than anything else said Sue Cobb a Miami lawyer who heads the Super Bowl Acquisition Committee more than the hanging itself with promises of a new stadium is the fact that the team owner did not take a position for his she said Cobb was only representative the meeting In contrast successful San Francisco sent four officials who sported seven-inch diameter blue buttons that said Bowl by the and spent about $40000 in promotional gimmicks for the team owners San Francisco added a new dimension to Super Bowl lobbying by raining post cards letters telegrams fruit and nut baskets and finally Zinfandel wine and wine glasses on the team owners at their homes offices and hotel rooms Super Bowls are big business to a city Miami and Metro tourism officials for example estimate that a championship game in the Orange Bowl would generate $100 million SUPER BOWL From 1C crease the sales tax to pay for the stadium failed Nov 2 support disappeared His active opposition to citywide sales tax vote for refurbishing the Orange Bowl was well known to NFL owners here Miami officials also conceded that their premature promises to have a new stadium built by 1985 promises they made with great fanfare and flourish at an meeting in June became the noose Rozelle for example said NFL officials were watching machinations over the proposed sales tax hikes closely and it appeared that for 1985 is up in the Promised a new stadium by Miami and Sports Authority officials the NFL had great expectations and as Rozelle said in June were looking for a modern stadium in Miami The same apparently expected of other Super Bowl contenders stadium for example is about 30 years old and still must build press boxes and other improvements before the Super Bowl comes two years from now In the end Miami was judged not by the $58 million in renovations to the Orange Bowl since the last Super Bowl was played there in 1979 not by the number of new hotel rooms it offered and not by its
