Red Raiders to Play Compton Tartars In Turkey Day Game Pomona junior college Red Raiders come out into the light of day for the first time this season when they play Comptons powerful Tartars in a contest Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, afternoon on Compton field. The game will start about 2:15 oclock. Compton will be favored on the basis of a 7 to 6 victory over Pasadena, a team that defeated Pomona, 33 to 0. But the Tartars likewise were beaten by Riverside, 7 to 6, and the Bengals were lucky in defeating Hisanaga Named Hens Captain On 40 Eleven EAGLES BOOST To Win Against Team of Los Angeles DeSotos Miss America, not content to be just the sweetheart of Sigma Chi, asks for her share in the glory of the 1939 football season here Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, afternoon, when Pomona stages its first game between girl football teams.

The Pomona Eaglettes are playing the Los Angeles DeSotos both teams boasting the classiest talent performing today in girls' ranks, most of the players being well known as softball stars and fern athletes. The kickoff will be at 2:15 o'clock, before what is expected to be a big crowd, on Pomona high school field. The Eagles lodge of Pomona is the sponsor, and proceeds go to the Christmas fund of the Eagles, from which baskets for the needy will be purchased next Yuletide. The game will be played under professional football rules. Archie Nisbet will referee.

Stan Acres will umpire and Dennis (Pat) Ahern will be the head linesman. The Standard Oil company will fur nish its announcing system for the occasion. The Eaglettes have been coached by Ab Young of Black-Foxe Mill tary academy and the Los Angeles Amazons by Jimmy Linton of Kentucky. They have shown a remarkable adaptability for football, wear regulation football equipment with the addition of special chest protectors and softball shoes instead of heavily cleated shoes worn by college football Because the hands of the girls are smaller, a smaller than regulation ball is used. Quarters will be 12 minutes.

The three best known girl grid stars will perform for Pomona. They are Jan Wood, at fullback, said to be as good as most high school stars; Andy Fay, a Glendora girl, who is a sensation at guard, weighing 205 pounds and handling the weight remarkably well, and Lois Terry, probably the most famous girls softball pitcher in the world. A southpaw, Lois using her pitching ability in hurling passes for the Eaglettes. She will alternate with Jan Wood at the fullback position. The fastest ball packer is Shirley Payne, at lefthalfback.

and she, too, will play for the Eaglettes in this game. In a six-man football game played recently at Gilmore stadium, Shirley outran Mickey Rooney and his boys team in a long dash for touchdown. On Pomona rests the outcome (he league this year. If Fan Ber nardino wins, the Cardinals tak the flag without dispute. If Po mona wins, a lot of things couh happen to the standings.

Here are some of the posibl combinations: If Pomona defeats Fan Bernar dino, Riverside defeats Fanta An and Chaffey heats Redlands: Pomona, 12 to 0. This is the next to the last game for Pomonas Raiders. They close the season December 1 at Ventura. For that reason, Coach Joe Bonnet may experiment mostly with an alljunior eleven from time to time, in an effort to see how the boys who will be back next season can perform. One hunch is that the Raiders will be stronger In daylight than they were under the arcs.

Their best attack will be thru the air, in the absence of any kind of a running attack capable of threatening Compton's powerful line, and Hugh Teitsworth may find spotting receivers easier in the sunshine. BonneJ. is expected to open with his regular combination of Co-Captain Earl Thomas and Bob Johnson at ends, Leo Fullivan and Hubert Colley at tackles, Co-Captain Jack Nickerson and Jim Biller at guards, Bruce Twerell at center. Game time is 7:45 oclock. Based on past performances, this game should be one of those that you shouldn't miss. Recent comparative scores indicate that the game will be close.

Additional spice Is added to this already boiling pot by the Leopard elevens de-termination to end once and for all the 25 game collegiate losing streak that has beset La Verne for five years. This streak was started when Caltech overpowered La Verne 32-7 five seasons back. Since that time the Leopards haven't been able to win in big company. Last year the Larruping Leopards had merry ideas about stopping this streak in the Armistice Day game with Caltech. But the Engineers turned the tables on Coach Paul Hertz and his team and ended a little Item on their own record of 21 consecutive setbacks.

(U.PJ It was with much gratification that I learned of Alfred Gwynne Vander-bilt'a acceptance of the presidency of the Belmont race track, Indeed, It gave me a thrill, because vt are so much alike.

Save for a few minor trait possessed by him and not by me, such as youth, good looks, personality, wealth, and a love for hard work, there is very little difference between us, Because of what I consider to be a great bond between the young millionaire and the Morris plan's most consistent customer, I feel no hesitancy whatsoever in suggesting to him ways and means of bettering Belmont Park when it opens with rari-mutuel machines next year. The first thing he wants to install are 25 cent or two-bit parimutuel windows. This idea of having two dollars as the smallest bet is no good. Vanderbilt will object to this, and so will lots of other misinformed persons, on the grounds that a man who cant afford to bet more than 25 cents shouldn't be given a chance. But take it from a man whose one prin ciple is to bet more than he can afford, there is no sense to their argument.

The only thing that a $2 minimum does is to make 25 cent bettors bet $2. Vanderbilt should see to it that there are more winners at Belmont Park. To hell with improving the grounds, by such means as putting birds of paradise on the Infield lake, or planting rare and exotic flowers, or adding two or three paved extrances and exits. Let's have more horses to do what the form chart says they are capable of doing. No one goes to a race track to enjoy the scenery.

I would much rather etand in an ash heap and watch a winner come home than sit in a replica of the Taj Mahal and watch the horse I had wagered on come etaggerlng in fifth or sixth. The only thing really pretty at a race track is your horse's nose in front at the Judges stand. By all means let Vanderbilt see to it that all customers of Belmont Park are equipped with Halloween costumes and false faces when they enter the place. These are to be slipped on when anyone is lucky enough to get a winner and go to the cashiers window. There is nothing so disheartening as to be recognized by a tried and true friend while you are cashing a ticket.

Because nine times out of ten and the T. and T. friend will approach you and put the bite on you for a few dollars to bet on the next race. There is no refusing such a request as this, because you are caught ready-handed, so to epeak. Imagine the Joy of smirking behind your Halloween mask as you see the dear old pals line up to watch the cashiers windows in the hopes of seeing someone they know.

Of course, this mask business will work both ways. Im not so sure I could spot my pals thru their eye slits. Are you? Free lunches should he a rart of every well run race track. All touts should he belled like cats. There should be one fixed race on every card, and it should be announced early enough In the day so that you have time to send Junior home for his pig bank.

I am forwarding these suggestions to Mr. Vanderbilt with a particularly plaintive postscript asking that he get a photo finish camera that. The United Press nominates as coach of the week Major Robert Reese (Bob) land of Tennessee. Around the country they're say-ing Tennessee doesn't deserve to be ranked among the top teams of 1939 because of a set-up schedule. But be that as It may, Neyland deserves ranking as one of the great coaches of this generation.

Ever since he packed his bags and headed for Knoxville back in 1926, Major Bob has been turning out great teams. FOOTBALL how some of them might corrected. Merritt found no justice In a situation where a team draws $200,000 and $300,000 gates weekly and Us members are paid perhaps $100 a month. He suggested wryly that a football players' union might bring the scales nearer a balance. Merritt found no justice in a situation where a coach is ordered to produce a winning team or get out. In such an atmosphere created by a money-minded group of alumni, a highly-paid coach will do almost anything to fill the bill and this twisted sense of values is spread to the impressionable youths on his team, he said.

In such an atmosphere, he continued, is bred another Beesetnyer. There is a lot wrong with football today, and I am just a little ashamed of it. There is nothing wrong with it that cannot be corrected, however, and basically the game has not lost any of its great value in the building of young he said. Being closer to the situation at Pomona college than any other, Merritt expounded upon what is done thete to give the game back to youth. Alumni and students have nothing to say about operation of the sports department.

All funds are handled by the athletic association, a part of the college. All coaches are members of the faculty and are chosen by the faculty. There are many scholarships open to competition between all students, many loans and giants-in-aid to needy students. Some students, said Merritt, can make more money working for scholarships than they can in dining hall and similar jobs. There are no poker games where, when an athlete has won $100 or so, the game ends.

There are no parallels to one instance in another university where a representative bet an athlete $1,000 he would not attend that school. There is no large miscellaneous' fund in the athletic association. There is no sum of money placed in another city's bank upon which lie graduate manager, under an assumed name, draws cheeks for football players. In open competition for scholarships, many of the money evils of football can be wiped out, believes Merritt. Merritt said any good coach, given enough money, can go out and hire a team of expert placers who can fill the huge stadiums and keep the financial musters happy.

But that Is not the true expression of a coach's Job. A coach should teach and mold and build youth to meet better equipped their problems as men. We're all yellow; some of us are just less yellow than others. If I can Instill a little more courage into a lmy to a point where, in later years, he will hang on a be little lunger in the pinrhes than ins fei-1 low men, then I beiiexe 1 line dune my job." Coach Wallace Newman sends his pigskin charges up against the University of Redlands Bulldogs Wednesday night. The game is slated for the Redlands field. The Bulldogs, who have played hot and cold football all season, also have championship aspirations. A victory over the Poets will give the Redlands eleven three wins and one loss in circuit play which would top the percentage of the Quakers, who were held to a scoreless tie by Pomona In early season game. Fpark plugs of the Whittier attack are Gene Wineinger, leading scorer of the circuit, and Myron Claxton, huge lineman, who has performed sensationally this year as a blocking back when the Poets are on the offensive.

Redlands is led by Bias Mercurio, fullback, who is largely responsible for the successful execution of the famous razzle-dazzle attack employed hy mentor Cecil Cushman.
