NO ONE KNOWS HOW LONG Knee Injury Sidelines Dawson KANSAS CITY (AP) Quarterback Len Dawson of the Kansas City Chiefs is on the sidelines again with another knee injury. This time, his right knee. A year ago, the ringleaoer of the world champions was out of action for six games because of a left knee injury. Ju.st how long Dawson will be sidelined this time is gue.ss. He may be ready Sunday when the Chiefs, stunned by two defeats in three National Football League games, open their home season against the Boston Patriots.

Then, again, he may not. Coach Hank Stram said Tuesday he doe.sn't know. Dr. Joseph Lichtor, an orthopedic said he dtX'sn't know. Neither did Dawson.

really too early to tell how long Dawson will be out. I say definitely until later in the week, said. Stram said if Daw.son play against the Patriots, the starling quarterback will be Mike Livingston, a third-year pro from Southern Methodist who filled in for the 35-year-old Dawson lakt season and guided Kansas City to victory in all six of the games. Dawson suffered his latest injury last Sunday when the Denver Broncos threw a five-man front-line ru.sh against the Chiefs and notched their third straight NFL victory, winning SPORTS LEN DAWSON other knee hurt now Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1970 Page 1-D by 26-13.

Dawson was dumped for losses seven times. He was held to 33 yards on his pas.ses, lost 76, had three intercepted, fumbled twice and was charged with at least a dozen badly thrown aerials. The injury to Dawson came in the first quarter. His knee bothered him the rest of the game, but he played all the way. Dawson said he would have had a bad game even if the injury occurred.

Lichtor said indication.s are injury is not as severe as the one last sea.son, but he sent Dawson a set of crutches just the same. The quarterback used the crutches Monday, but discarded them Tuesday. Kansas City lost to Bo.s- ton since 1964. Stram realized the Patriots may duplicate game plan and try their luck with the same 5-man rush that proved succe.ssful for the Broncos. The Patriots, 1-2, used a 5-man line last Sunday in their 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Colts, and Coach Clive Bu.sh said it was best defensive game in two years.

KARL Morning Line Punting Parade The Dallas Cowboys used to have their Kicking Kara van. TCU had its own version of it last week in an effort to find a strong leg that could get the Horned Frogs out of trouble spots. And why Bill Gilliland was suited out for the first time in three seasons last week. The junior squadman from Liberty (he was redshirted as a sophomore) came to TCU as a defensive tackle and although he was big enough, at 6-2, 215, he good enough. He punted his high school days, but after practicing for three full with the freshmen and the varsity and never even putting on a purple game Jersey, anything looked good.

Gilliland looked good to the TCU coaches, and he punted six times during the game for a 37.5-yard average that was a yard better than Ken mark for Arkansas. One of the boots traveled 47 yards. Now if we never hear of Bill Gilliland again, know the Frogs have been taking advice from the Cowboys. Oilers Hurting Houston offensive guard Tom fourth-year man from Notre Dame, had his knee whacked on yesterday and surgeons repaired damage to both cartilege and ligaments. be out for the season, however, and that leaves coach Wally Lemm with a problem at guard, where the backup man is Ron Saul.

Saul Is a fine prospect out of Michigan State, but a rookie and besides that, been hurt, too. He banged up a knee on the kickoff of the first exhibition game. The Oilers signed Cardinal castoff Ken Gray, but Lemm probably will move Doug Wilkerson, the number one draft choice, from defensive end back to the offensive guard spot for which he was originally ticketed. Fortunately for Saul and Wilkerson, they be facing the Smith Boy.s—Bubba and Billy when Baltimore comes to town, but the Colts had many patsies in their lineup lately, so that improve the picture much. Albarado Rallies To KO Brasier Sportpourri new swimming coach, Pat Patterson, is only the second man to be head coach at three Southwest Conference schools.

Matty Bell was football coach at TCU, Texas and SMU, but no match for Patterson in one respect. Patterson has been head swimming coach at Arkansas, and Texas in the last three years. Steve Engel, the 6-1, 218-pound rookie running back from Colorado, is one of the biggest backs the Cleveland Browns have had since Jim Brown retired (has it been only five years ago?) playing behind Bo Scott right now. Brasier, wa.s never in the fight, actually; lAit he stunned the throng of 1,677 fans by chopping a right to the Uvalde head as he came in low' late in th second round. Albarado went dow'n, and it was a clean knockdown, but he was unhurt and bounced up at the count of two.

Before they could mix it up again, the bell rang. Round three was a totally different affair. Albarado pursued his man around the ring and finally solved his hit, grab and shove tactics in the best way possible. He set him up with a lengthy combination to the body and head as he took control of the fight, then zinged a left hook home to chin and the Oklahoma City middleweight slumped to the deck. He got up, but as referee Lew Johnson finished counting to eight and motioned the two together again Albarado smashed a right to stomach and followed with a left to the head that dumped him in a crumpled' heap in the corner.

The game Oklahoman got up again and came back winging. He landed several good punches in the ensuing melee but Oscar ended it all with a lethal straight left to the chin that dropped his man for the third time in the round. That means a technical knockout in Texas, but it was only a matter of time before Brasier would fall and not be able to get up. His manager said later he would have stopped it then had not the boxing rules stipulated that it be halted after three knockdowns. Albarado now has 30 knockouts among his 36 victories and has suffered only three losses.

Brasier is now 37-9. He claims he has never before been floored. Kenny Weldon decked Chuy Rocha three times, once each in the sixth, eighth and ninth rounds, en route to an easy 10- round decision over the Nuevo Leon featherweight champion. Weldon, the Texas feather king, was ahead on all cards by margins ranging from the 98-95 on judge Mike a 1 tally sheet to the 98-90 bulge given him by the other judge, Eddie Lopez. Quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Craig Morton both were unable to light a spark against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday in a 20-7 National Football League loss. Staubach started and Morton replaced the second-year man after two interceptions. Morton had little luck, too.

Staubach is bitter about being yanked so early in the game. It was early in the second period when Coach Tom Landry took him out. at my best in a tough Staubach said. Landry said Tuesday, think Roger will do a good job. He has a great arm but lacks experience.

(AP) A Wichita State University spokesman said Tue.sday no decision has been made on whether the final six games on the 1970 football schedule will be played. Conrad Downing, sports information director, said he attended a meeting of players and university President Clark Ahlberh Tuesday morning and no vote was taken. Other sources indicated a majority of the players expressed sentiment for finishing the season. It also was learned that Missouri Valley Conference officials were working to get National Collegiate Athletic Association approval for using freshmen and not having this count against their post-season eligibility when they are seniors.

Ahlberg was not available for c'omment but relayed word through his aides that no decision has been made. He went directly from the meeting with players to a memorial service here for Bert Katzenmeyer, Wichita State athletic director who died last Friday in the plane crash in Colorado which claimed the lives of 30 people. Shockers May Play Out Season one quarterback, but you have to see a trend to warrant doing Landry is under intense pressure from Dallas fans to make a decision. Landry smiled and said, appreciate crowd pleasers and both ended prematurely. Sweet Raymond Boyd ran his record to 10-0 with a third-round knockout of Gilbert Gutierrez in a scheduled 10-round welter scrap and Fernando Rodriguez stopped Juan Myers in the fifth of a scheduled six round on a TKO. Boyd, nicknamed the and, like his name- garbed entirely in pink except for his boxing shoes, took a teating for two rounds and was knoc-ked down at the end of the first heat with a lunging left from the San Antonian. The round was all Gutierrez, also, and Boyd was behind on all cards until the third.

Boyd came out in that stanza and hammered body with a ferocious attack on the ropes that seemed destined to end it right there. Gutierrez came fighting back, but he was still ailing from the body punches and Boyd finished him off with two right uppercuts and a rocketing left uppercut, all to the chin. Gutierrez fell on his back, tried to rise but and fell back as Roy Ovalle counted 10 over him. The Io.ss snapped a nine-fight winning streak for Gutierrez. Rodriguez and Myers fought to a four-round draw in February hut it was obvious this one wa.sn’t going to end that way from the beginning.
