Sidney Hillman says his CIO Political action committee (PAC) Intends to be a permanent force In American politics. Recently It haa been assigned much influence probably too much In some cases for the defeat of certain congressmen this spring. PAG Itself has played, pretty mum about claiming influence. This deadpan silence in itself might be smart politics. Hillman is PAC chairman.

In an interview we asked him to say what the score is. He said PAC haa not taken exclusive credit for those congressional defeats, and can't. TAC gunned for the whipped congressmen but other groups were active, too. What about these defeated ones: Senator Holman (R-Ore), Rep. Newsome (D-Ala), and Reps.

Starnes (D-AIa) and Costello (D-Cal), The last two members of the Dies committee, whose chairman, Rep. Dies (D-Tex), has decided not to run again? Explains Technicality Tes, Hillman said, in each of those cases the local PAC worked to defeat those men. But he heavily emphasized this: The national PAC, as such, does not work for an individual congressman's defeat. That Is done by the local branch of the PAC. Hillman said PAC looks at all congressmen's records two ways: their stand on international cooperation after the war and their home front policies.

Take the rase of Holman. He was defeated by Wayne Morse, former member of the War Labor board. Hillman said: Holman was an isolationist. The PAC supported Morse. When he was on the labor board, Morse handed dawn some decisions which antagonized labor.

But we preferred him to Holman. We want a congress which will work for in ternational cooperation." Some political commentators have expressed the suspicion that PAC, which endorses a fourth term for President Roosevelt, eventually miglyt seek to take over the Democratic party. Hillman saids I wouldn't take the Democratic party as a gift on a silver platter. But PAC Is here to stay. It will not end after this years elections.

It is In permanent operation. But Washington Then Awakes PAC was set up by the CIO last July. For many months, while itj did its spadework quietly, it was, practically ignored by the political highdomes in Washington. But they scrambled over one another after the spring primaries to diagnose PAC. Commenting with a grin on this long period of neglect and then the sudden attention, Hillman said: A lot of startled politicans underestimate the strength of the progressive spirit in this country.

It's a mistake to read the 1912 elections, when only 28 million voted instead of the 50 million who voted in 1940, as a trend toward conservatism. Hillman said the local PAC the country has been divided into 14 regions works with local groups such as AFL unions, church organizations, and leagues of women voters. The local PAC takes a- stand for or against a candidate. Hillman said the national PAC upon request or upon Us own initiative will supply the local PAC with information on the record of the -local congressman seeking reelection. All over the country PAC has worked to get people registered to vote and to set up community organizations.

The impression we got from Hillman Is that politicans won't 6neeze at his PAC anymore. patriotism is written in dm Yours Is Written on every Bond you buy mis mm in the JT r-jr-. bv 3 A jf I r- '3-U mM'A' lJlI.
