trying times The worst: Enoch's younger brother Gwyn was killed in 1957 while competing in a race on NASCAR's old convertible circuit at Richmond A mountain of a man at 6-4 230 pounds Staley perhaps situations at North Wilkesboro Speedway known for the colorful characters it attracts though crowds now are considerably more subdued than in the old days An incident that still flabbergasts him was last year at North Wilkesboro Persistent spring rains plagued qualifying forcing reduction of the track's unique two-day system for the top eight spots to a onetime trial run Then it rained again Saturday night and into Sunday morning Although the sun broke through about 10 am Staley and NASCAR had to postpone the race for a week The deluge brought earth worms and nightcrawlers by the millions out of the infield area soil seeking relief from the waterlogged earth by crawling onto the asphalt racing surface They clogged drain pipes and entwined Inches deep on the pavement There was no way to clean up the slimy mess in time to get a race in "It was tough calling that race off when we could see the sun coming out and fans were standing around waiting" said Staley "There was no choice but it
