The advanced non-flowering plants — such as ferns and their allies were followed by the more complicated flowering plants. Many plants of ancient times have disappeared from the earth as known from a study of fossil remains; others have persisted. Ferns and their allies, such as horsetails and mosses, have been around a long time. Many show little change from their ancestors of an era 200 to 300 million years ago. The older species were usually larger. Most coal deposits are the fossilized remains of great ferns, towering horsetails and many smaller ferns. The fossilized leaves of a horsetail or the fronds of a fern have been observed in chunks of coal. According to geologists, the coal beds were formed in a period some 400 million years ago. The Ginkgo or maiden hair tree, native to China, has been known from early times. Ginkgo fossils have been found in rocks as old as 200 million years. 4-25 (Ricky McLendon of Phenix City, Alabama, wins a prize for this question.
