referred to as television's "Ben-Hur" or the 21-inch "Gone With the Wind" After all as executive producer David Victor pointed out it's the most ambitious film television has ever attempted costing over $2 million and involving 41 shooting days with a cast of more than 100 speaking parts including 25 star roles headed by Richard Widmark's first TV performance as a Kennedyesque President of the United States "Plus" said Victor "we will be measured against a known quality This was made from Fletcher Knebel's book which was so widely read that it was the No 1 best-seller in the country" 6115 0 cle show such projects is much debated At one time "Vanished" was scheduled as a five-hour show to be offered on five successive nights again there were plans to break out one complete evening for it as CBS did recently with that old theatrical warhorse "Ben-Hur" there have been suggestions of a weekly hour In which multichaptered stories would play to conclusion and be succeeded by another the method of Masterpiece Theater on public TV THE SHOWING of "Vanished" in two parts was a compromise and a rather weak one considering how many old movies are shown thus Victor's only comment Is that audiences that sit through the first half will be sure to turn on the second It's a difficult admission for the veteran Russian-born producer He's also executive producer and creator of Mar- cus Welby MD and he'll be competing with himself as of course will Robert Young Victor who has been a TV producer since the days of Dr Kildare and who has two other potential series on hand (both piloted as TV Movies "The Bravos" with George Peppard and "Counselonat-law" with Arthur Hill) believes "Vanished" Is uniquely fitted for television because its author is a distinguished journalist and his ap- proach to fiction is in a factual framework ((t(()1 f) EIT 1 14-11 Richard Widmark Plays President in movie of best-selling novel O'Connell under Victor's supervision However Victor feels that If you call "Vanished" a television epic the aceent should be on the word 'Highlights include Pearl singing "Indian Love Call" and breaking up the flutist attempting to play an obbligato an old friend of Pearl's Chief Grey Eagle doing an Indian hoop dance and Pearl's husband Louis Bellson wih a great drum solo during a salute to the era of the big bands Other guests: Tony Bennett (who toured with NBC's prime time this week split in two parts on Monday and Tuesday nights In addition to Widmark top performers include among others James Farentino as the President's press secretary Arthur Hill as the "vanished" presidential adviser Marshall as the thin-lipped overzealous head of the CIA Robert Hooks as a top grade FBI agent and Robert Young as a politically powerful wheelhorse senator from out West the president's bitter opponent The able Buzz Kulik directed the movie from Dean Reisner's screenplay and it was produced by David scope and sweep of Fletcher's novel which is terrific suspense at the top international level must be captured in intimate human terms "What makes 'Vanished' epochal a milestone in TV history is that it tells a story whole We have the time that is necessary to tell all of Fletcher's story not cut it to fit an hour or 90 minutes "ALMOST NO novels have been dramatized completely There's a wealth of dramatic material in 'Of Human Bondage' that has never been used on the screen Now perhaps we can take some great books like 1Dodsworth' or 'Arrowsmith' and do the whole story whether it takes three hours five hours 10 hours to tell it all" Obviously this is a ploy borrowed from abroad in the wake of the success of "The Forsyte Saga" and other multipart European films How commercial TV here will "THIS IS no DeMilleian spectacle" he said "We have some big scenes a presidential rally in the Sugar Bowl shots on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk doubling for the Enterprise "But this is a work in television's dramatic art form which is highly intimate drama told in very personal terms A battlefield with thousands of troops may be a great scene in theaters the most important battlefield in television is the human face This is a closeup art The Moo 0
