Day- Raiders Take this year's schedule for instance Ryan scheduled every tough team in the area he possibly could In twenty-three regular season games he played seventeen class A schools including incidentally both the class A representatives to large state tournament this week in St Louis North Kansas City and I Southwest the season started we had a scrimmage with Shawnee-I Ryan says whipped us and I think that was the making of the team They decided they as good as they thought and so they worked that much Bryant Barnes the slender 6-2 1 shot wizard who was chosen the! most valuable player at Columbia is one big reason for success He scored almost 600 points during the season for an average of almost 20 a game At Columbia he hit just short of 50 per cent in four games and his favorite shot is a leaping 1 -hander from the circle or from the side not too easy a poke But there are other facets to the team which give it class The reserves are tremendous Ryan at Columbia started with Bob Markham 6-7 at center Rowland Nof singer 6-0 and Buddy Adel 5-S at guards and Ed Siebert 6-1 and Barnes at forwards Need for GoocP Subs The Raiders play a tight pressing man-for-man defense and as a result usually commit more fouls than the average team But that hurt much since Ryan can call on 6-6 John Windsor a graceful outside shooting sophomore Ed Bartlett 6-0 Bill Goetze 6-3 and Garrett Cole 6-4 to fill gaps wdth their height They all shoot wrell too Then the littler men who are fast and accurate are Dave Smith 5-11 Jack Henry 5-6 Kenneth Phifer 5-11 Windsor and Goetze are sopho-j mores Cole and Bartlett are juniors That may be the reason for remarks in his hotel room after the game as parents alumni and friends crowded in to congratulate him I am 35 years old and accomplished everything I wanted to he said Bobby Del Greco hit a bouncing ball with two out Power fielded it but threw poorly to Cox covering first Del Greco was safe on the error but rounded first and was caught off as Shantz backed up on the play Shantz also threw the ball away for error No 2 on the play and Del Greco wound up on second Cox then hit Roman Rodriguez with a pitched ball and walked Bill Hall He threw ball one to Law and on the next pitch the Pirate hurler sent the ball sailing out of the park He was aided by a stiff wind blowing straight out to center Ironically that was the only hit given up by Cox in his 3-inning stint In the first and third innings he faced only three batters Rume was next to arrive on the mound and- the game quickly turned into a rout The righthander entirely responsible for all the trouble he encountered three of the five runs yielded being unearned At the same time he was also hit freely Ditmar came- on to start and his baptism to the 1956 baseball wars was a pinch-hit home run by Gene Freese who batted for Kline Ditmar gave up another single and Pless muffed a ground ball before the inning ended his main trouble Lasorda the southpaw purchased out of the Brooklyn organization made his first appearance in "a Kansas City uniform in the eighth He gave up one run and was fortunate to escape that cheaply Walks First Batter His first act was to walk Curt Roberts He fanned Eddie as Roberts stole second Lee Walls walked and Roberts was thrown out trying to steal third Preston Ward doubled to center scoring Walls and was thrown out trying to stretch his blow into a triple Nuslear Energy Products Division of AC Industries fnc Buffalo New York prlmi contractor for the United States Atomic Energy Oommission has immediate openings for the Vprtirs!
