12 - Tuts4»y, March 3, IW REDt*NDS DAILY FACTS Softer Is The Look For Spring Look for SOFTNESS in every fashion you choose for spring and you'Ji be on the right track in dressing for the coming season. Softness means case in shaping, in necklines, in waistlines, in skirts, in hemlines, nnd in fabrics. Right are the soft cowl necklines or those with soft bows. Right are sleeves bloused "a la Tom Jones" or softened with shirring, pleats, etc. Right are waistlines with blou- son detail and these may soften at any point between the waist and hip. Right are skirts with wide pleats that swish and flow, right, too, are godets and other softening effects. Right are hemlines that are softly mobile. Wrong is froufrou! In fabrics the right choices are whisper - weiglit crepes. TOPS FOR TEEN TOES - This leather flat with the open look is predicted to be a favorite with teens. The patent style above has three straps lined up from instep fo throat, secured on either side with pearl buttons. Heads Go Info Hafs This Year There are about 50 milh'on women in America wlio for the past dozen years couldn't have worn a hat if they had wanted to. The millinery industry had stopped sizing hats. They all came in size 22. Yet recently a national survey taken by t h e Millinery Institute turned up the fact that only 41 per cent of potential hat wearers are size 22. You can sec how this could create a problem. A gal whose head size is 211,2 would feel like a pinhead in any hat she tried on. One with a size 23 would think she had perched a lemon atop a grapefruit. A few manufacturers d i d make hats in large beadsizes, and they were designed for elderly matrons. Yet a woman's head doesn't get fatter as she gels older. In fact, most of us arc a darn sight more "fatliead- ed" wlien we're j-oung. The bouffant hairdo was to blame for the one-size hat. It came into being when a h a t wasn't a hat at all, but a bit of fluff perched on top of the head and clamped to the hair with combs. Balenciaga started the fashion. But heads liave to go INTO tlic new hats — cloches, turbans, bretons and sailors — and one size just won't fit cverj'onc. The industry has finally faced that /ate. Jlcad sizes are back for spring after a pilot test in a w c 11- known New York department store proved that the larger head sizes outsold the standard 22s. It seems that a good many of us haven't as yet visited a head shrinkor. The millinery industry has found uphill work trying to make women realize that hats are truly the perfect finishing touch to a pretty costume. It must have been an embarrassing revelation to find that they were cutting off a large portion of tlicir own market. The clothes for spring are soft and feminine. They call for hats. Not in many years has there been so much fashion emphasis placed on the spring chapeau. And all styles are pert and pretty. If you've given up on hats in the past because you simply didn't look good in anything you tried on, perhaps you never realized that Ihe hats just didn't fit you. soft airy wools, chilfon, cottoni and blends with the cotton candy approach. Sheers, of course. Tlie shape of the spring season is a flowing movement from tJic neckline of softened details, down the body m a barely clinging, lightly shaped silhouette, winding up at the hemline w'here pleats, ruffles and flounces look newly important. Colors arc softened, too, with pink the standout, followed by sherbert and flower hues. Almost all colors will be on the softened side, although crisp contrasts of navy and white, and black and white are often used to point up the anj-thing - but- crisp silhouettes and details. You'll find this softness look carrying many names: Romantic, Feminine, Subtle, Gentle Shapings — but they arc all one and the same. Soft is tlie way to look this spring. Retain Juices Folding the top crust over tlic lower crust before crimping will keep the juices in a pio. Hafs Come In Leather ,^ The leather hat is important this spring. You will see it in pillboxes and domes, in turbans and sailors. It will turn up in smooth or grained leathers, in artfully draped and wrapped turbans in shiny kidskin or soft suede. It will flash in black patent leather and combined with straw; in pale lilac tones and in navy blues. Gleaming black leather — once a classic shoe material — now also appears in hats and apparel. Resort fashions show coats in shiny black patent leather, styled like an abbreviated trench coat. For the beach, it's lined in white terry cloth. Bermuda shorts are showing up in smooth leather — in spanking white or basic black. Light in weight and easy to care for, they promise to carry through to varm weather.
