somewhat shocking 28-0 win Saturday over South Carolina was a game of feet The feet belonged to tailback Amos Lawrence and punter Steve Streater who combined to kick a South Carolina team some preseason polls had picked for the nation's top 20 Lawrence carrying 25 times for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns sparked a 14-0 halftime lead a gap the Gamececks never threatened to narrow Streater a Sy Iva sophomore and brother of Tennessee quarterback James Streater punted 7 times for a 413 average Those impressive digits tell only half the story Streater continually backed the Gamecocks Into poor field position with a combination of long high spirals and short precision boots which veered out of bounds Meanwhile North Carolina's defense which last season yielded 21 points per game never gave the Gamecocks a big play South Carolina's deepest penetration was to the Tar Heel 28 And in the stands where coach Dick Crum's name was taken in vain last season the chant changed to "Darn good coach" What a difference a year makes "We were unfortunate that our field position in the first quarter was poor" said Crum "Our kicking game got us out of that disadvantage" With 5 minutes elapsed in the second period and the teams stalemated North Carolina got a break Safety Ricky Barden intercepted quarterback Garry Harper's long pass at the Tar Heel 32 He returned it to the South Carolina 40 At that point Lawrence stopped in his early carries slipped through the line for 10 yards setting up a first down at the 29 A penalty and a 3-yard gain on Phil Farris's reverse placed the ball on the 21 where Lawrence gave a nifty exhibition On third down he took a pitchout left and found a Gamecock defender waiting "I gave him a little juke" explained Lawrence a junior who has rushed for more than 1000 yards in each of his first 2 seasons Lawrence cut back sharply to his right breezed past a linebacker and slipped into high gear finishing in the end zone with 9:31 By WHITEY KELLEY Observer Sports Edda RALEIGH If NC State didn't find Ted Brown's succesor Saturday then running back Dwight Sullivan will do until something better comes along A 5-10 200-pound Durham junior Sullivan picked his way through East Carolina's aggressive defense for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wolfpack beat the Pirates 34-20 The victory wasn't easy by any means to which a record Carter-Finely Stadium crowd of 53400 will attest In fact it took 3 second-half touchdowns by the Wolf-pack who fell behind 17-13 at halftime Sullivan who carried the football only 7 times as a freshman and 7 times as a sophomore while he watched Brown finish an ACC record 4602-yard career got several suprises Saturday night his first starting assignment and then 15 chances to carry the football "Coach (Bo) Rein didn't tell me until just before the kickoff 1 was going to start" Sullivan said "No I didn't think 1 would get the A -Iv football that tlp se I i -)'4 much because figured Billy Ray '411 Vickers tell you I really had the jitters before the game I kept wondering if I'd freeze when I got the football but I got settled down as soon as someone hit me" Regarded as the ACC favorite NC State needed its second-half surge after East Carolina built its lead on touchdown drives of 67 and 71 yards It was the Pack defense headed by defensive end James Butler which actually turned the game around in the first four minutes of the second half Butler who collared Pirate runners for losses of 17 and 7 yards was injured in the final period and probably will be out for the season after undergoing knee ligament surgery today The first sign of NC State's defensive revival came when East Carolina Q3 Leander Green a Wolfpack in the first half when he flitted for 84 yards in 14 carries was pressured into a bad pitchout that resulted in a 21- yard loss back to the Pirate 2 early in the third quarter Taking over near midfield State went 52 yards in 4 plays QB Scott Smith reeled off runs of 29 and 17 yards before his reserve freshman Darnell Johnson scored from the 1 and Nathan Ritter kicked the point for a 20-17 State lead with 10:50 left in the period The Woltpack never again trailed A pass mind missing the punting "1 love it" he said midway through the fourth quarter when Carolina led 52-7 "Let's score another one" The Chargers scored the first three times they had the ball on a 1-yard dive by quarterback Ellsworth Turner a 42-yard pass from Turner to Reggie "Super Gnat" Smith and a 47-yard neld goal by Cox Just like that Alabama was down 17-0 and when the Vulcans got the ball after Cox's field goal owner-head coach Harry Lander replaced starting quarterback Chris Vacarella with backup Mark Cahill The Chargers had prepared all week for Alabama's strong option-based rushing attack but when Vacarella was lifted the Vulcans became a drop-back passing team though not very successful At halftime Alabama had 7 yards rushing By game's end after Cahill had been sacked countless times the Vulcan ground attack totaled 3 yards By LES BOWEN Observer Staff Writer Some first-place showdown Prior to Saturday's 52-14 annihilation of the Alabama Vulcans by the Carolina Chargers in front of 7- 335 fans at Charlotte's Memorial Stadium the Chargers were tied with the Vulcans and the Jacksonville Firebirds for first place in the American Football Association Each team was 10-3 entering Saturday's action but Carolina defeated Jacksonville in 2 of 3 meetings this year so the way the Chargers figured it the Vulcans were the only thing standing between them and a rousing chorus of "We're No 1" Alabama beat Carolina 28-0 May 19 at Birmingham in the AFA opener for both teams and the Chargers have been looking forward to a rematch But the rematch was a mismatch Carolina set a team record for scoring points For a long time it didn't look like Mike Cox would even punt and when the Chargers finally kicked the ball away with less than 2:00 left in the game he was so out of practice he shanked a 28- Page 40 Clemson gets the big plays blanks Furman 21-0 Page 4D Alabama's Bear Bryant gets 285th career coaching victory in 30-6 romp over Georgia Tech Page 5D American Express tennis
