(CC) Noticiero 1 1:30 pm 0 The Tonight Show Simon Simon (R) off the beaten path CLIMB UP ON Uncle lap and tell you about what you won't see on TV tonight Some 200-plus CBS affiliates this evening will broadcast the movie starring singer-song writer Barry Mani-low But not Channel 10 which as of this writing is the only one that Such are the mystical ways of TV that while it's "No-pacabana" for Sacramento on Tuesday the movie will mysteriously appear on Channel 10 Saturday night at 11:30 Manilow fans will have to stay up late but nobody said it was easy It could have been worse In fact it almost was The station originally planned to dump the movie altogether' and change its mind until Monday morning Instead of on Tuesday Channel 10 will show the 1978 miniseries a hackneyed wartime soap opera with Angie Dickinson Dennis Weaver and Robert Wagner moping around in Pearl Harbor while they wait for the bombs to fall "Pearl" starts tonight continues Wednesday and Saturday is loosely based on Manilow's 1978 hit record of the same name Set in the 1940s the story of pianist-composer Tony Starr (Manilow) who's in hot pursuit of a spunky singer named Lola (Annette who is in turn pursued by a sinister nightclub owner (Joseph Bologna) Fstelle Getty of "Golden Girls" plays Manilow's mother With 10 songs written exclusively for the movie the first made-for-TV musical in decades so it has sort of a double appeal for Manilow fans And for what it's worth "Copacabana" isn't bad campy fun and will not lead anyone who watches it to a life of crime in cash flowing in The decision has a little to do with timing and a lot to do with money Channel 10 owns local broadcast rights to and had one showing left before its deal expires at the end of the year Saturday marks the 44th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Channel 10 Program manager Kurt Eichsteadt explained timing seems to be for the station to an audience and make some money Channel 10 will glean more money from than from "Copacabana" because the station-can sell virtually all the commercial time itself CBS sold the lion's share of the commercials in and left affiliates with about four-minutes for themselves Eichsteadt scheduled the miniseries before he knew about but said it have mattered anyway He offered to switch it to Sunday after- noon but for ratings purposes CBS wanted the movie either in prime time or late night chsteadt and CBS finally compromised on late Saturday night When an affiliate rejects a network program it becomes fair game for any other station in town But if Channel 10 hadn't changed its mind it would have been hard cheese for Manilow mavens The other affiliates Channel 3 (NBC) and Channel 13 (ABC) were out because would not bump programming from their own networks and independent stations Channel 31 and Channel 40 were locked into print advertisements promoting their lineups This sort of thing is unusual but happens occasionally Ironically Eichsteadt was involved the last time then as the programmer at Channel 3 Last spring NBC scheduled the Richard Chamberlain miniseries A and it conflicted with an Oakland baseball game Channel 3 was committed by contract to broadcast When Channel 3 bumped "Wallenberg" Channel 40 picked it up as a prestige item The word does not leap to mind with thoughts of Barry Manilow was heavily promoted and TV Guide has a story about Manilow in this week's issue So one way or another viewers know it's coming even if not arriving when it's supposed to Despite his change of heart Eichsteadt still expects the telephone lines to be seared by angry fans who think of him as the grinch who stole Barry "And" he conceded be interested in any Movies White 2:25 am Miles to Midnight" (1963) Sophia Loren Anthony Perkins 2:30
