So Dunn ran his keeper and Thomas McLaurin a corner back and tackle Wayne Poole smothered the nimble Virginian before he could make his turn Big Mike Brewington a wide-line- quarterback Mike Dunn of Duke as he attempted a two-point conversion dash with just 62 seconds remaining in the game to take a thrilling 17-16 victory Saturday and thus claim a modified version of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship The pesky Pirates deep in homegrown manpower have beaten North Carolina State and Duke in the past eight days The statistics in the decision over Duke by ECU were just as close as the score Each team had 21 first downs and the winners amassed 361 net yards to Duke's 344 Duke was in position to make an impressive comeback when it struck with ECU leading 17-10 and less than two minutes remaining on the clock Sophomore Craig Hoskins a 194-pound fullback took the ECU kick- Observer Photo By BILL BILLINGS Duke's Mike Harney Is Caught On The Faeemask fey East Carolina linebacker Harold Randolph Passes Clemson 21-14 verta A Mike MeCee directs Duke 9 1CK Kentucky Rally Nips Tar Heels By GLENN ROLLINS Observer Staff Writer LEXINGTON Ky Mel Collins said he had never fumbled a punt before Not unmolested Not in the three full seasons he's been running 'em back for North Carolina Fact is in his freshman year against Wake Forest he took a punt 45 yards for a touchdown But the admirable streak ended Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium where Kentucky rallied to down the Tar Heels 10-7 in their mutual season opener With 5:33 left and the Tar Heels leading 7-3 Collins fumbled his Collins first punt fumbled it flatout saw it fall out of his reach saw UK's Freddie Williams engulf it at the UNC 33 saw the game begin slipping out of his team's victory column "It was like a knuckleball coming down" the 5-foot-8 171-pound wingback said of the 33-yard punt "I signaled for a fair catch but I kinda juggled it Then I was falling one way and it was falling the other "I don't know I didn't misjudge it I just didn't handle it They hit me but I don't think they interfered I was already losing the ball "There've been times when I got hit catching a punt and fumbled it 1 remember some like that But I've never just messed one up like that" But where to lay blame for the loss in a rematch of last year's Peach Bowl which Kentucky now 18th-ranked won 21-0? Larry Dick and the airways Saturday to force the Tigers into 21-14 submission The Terps were relieved to get away with their 21st straight Atlantic Coast Conference Football success something that wasn't a certainty until the clock snuffed out a final Clemson threat at the Maryland 21 A crowd of 44650 had to like what it saw of Coach Charley Pell's Tigers because they saw their team take a 14-7 lead in the third quarter and battle the heavily favored Terps on even terms "The difference in the game boiled down to five or six plays" Pell observed Those 5 or 6 plays didn't go our way but when they do we'll be a winner like Maryland is now" Pell who replaced Red Parker as Clemson's head coach at the close of last season blamed himself for allowing the momentum of the game to turn toward Maryland in the third quarter "That field goal attempt in the third quarter was a dumb play my fault" he admitted "We had scored to go ahead and our defense had Maryland under control we had the momentum with us" With Clemson leading 14-7 with 7:03 left in the third quarter Pell called on Obed Ariri for a 53-yard field goal It was blocked by Terp linebacker Lloyd Burruss and the Terps spanned 57 yards in eight plays for a tie at 14-all "Our execution was off" Pell advised "Ariri has the leg to kick it that far but we were slow getting the kick off and that gave Maryland good field position" It was at that point that Maryland's Jerry Claiborne decided that'it was time to make a change at quarterback since starter Mark Manges had trouble reaching the end zone Dick a senior and one-time starter two years ago when Manges was hurt completed five of seven passes for two touchdowns and 1 1 8 yards Dick extracted Maryland from a third-and-19 situation by firing a 25- Sec MARYLAND
