A former Charlotte News columnist and assistant sports editor was killed last night when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing I- 95 near Fayetteville to get help with a flat tire. Robert Lee "Babe" Saunders Jr. 55, editor of The Pinehurst Outlook in Pinehurst up until Thanksgiving, was driving south on I-95 about 19 miles north of Fayetteville about 10:30 p.m. when his car had a flat tire, according to spokesmen for The Fayetteville Observer and Marks Funeral Home in Rockingham. Saunders, a newspaperman for 28 years, parked the car in the median and was walking across the southbound lane when a tractor-trailer driven by Patrick George Gleason, 26, struck him, The Fayetteville Observer spokesman said.

Funeral arrangements for Saunders, a Rockingham native, are incomplete and are being handled by Marks Funeral Home. Saunders worked at The News 13 years as a columnist, sports writer, state editor, city editor and finally assistant sports editor. He left The News three times, taking positions at The Charleston News and Courier (Charleston, S.C.), The Chattanooga News-Free Press (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Golf World Magazine in Pinehurst. He served as news editor of the Charleston paper and managing editor of Golf World Magazine. Since leaving The News in 1975, he worked with Sports Week Magazine in Atlanta and The Pinehurst Outlook.

J. Neal Cadieu, president of the Richmond County Journal Inc. and a friend of Saunders for 15 years, said, "He really was doing an exceptional job, he was a great golf player and this is golf country." Cadieu said Saunders left the Pinehurst weekly because he had received offers from other newspapers and from the state government. "He and his father had been active in the Democratic party and he was waiting for the new administration to come in," Cadieu said. He said Saunders also had some health problems.

Before joining The News in 1959 he was managing editor of The Concord Tribune. Saunders attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
