along the 47-yard line then braked twisted out of the grasp of a Middle a few yards upfield and followed a wall down the sideline for a punt-return touchdown Never mind Jeff Green's clip-inthe-back of Ohanian near the 10- yard line The refs missed it so Gawdun suggested happily "Say it never happened" Navy would like to have said that about its next punt less than two minutes later from its 35 But nobody could have missed Blue Devil senior defensive back Earl Cook crashing in untouched from the left side and throwing his body across the ball as it left Ohanian's foot The ball blocked cleanly bounded toward the right sideline the same right sideline that Gavvdun had skirted so successfully Cook duplicated the trick scooping up the hall and finishing with an Uncontested scoring play That jumped the score to I 4-3 the way it read at the half and Duke Coach Mike McGee had a feeling "The punt return and blocked kick on successive series were obviously the turning points of the game" he said "Although Navy fought hard throughout the momentum was so strong in our favor they could not come back "Our special teams have worked long and hard and today was a classic example of the importance of that work and the kicking game" Cook said his big play came from Duke's basic nine-man rush something it has tried in every game Lehigh Explodes For 43-7 Victory Over Davidson By GLENN ROLLINS Observer Staff Writer DURHAM Gimme a A big A for defense a three-touchdown-making defense of defense un-funky Duke into Navy's face Saturday in victory that was 28-3 by the the Blue Devils' got with the Midshipmen Duke played it with an entertaining flair a flair seldom employed by Coach Mike McGee's offensive schemes And after Navy's game had given it a 3-0 lead the second period Art 32-yard punt to the Duke up an eventual 19-yard goal by Bob Tata the Devil kicking game turned the contest around First the Middies' Ohanian punted from his end zone and line-drived a spiral to Duke sophomore George er has completed 50 of 73 passes for 959 yards "We didn't do anything different at all in the second half we just stopped making mistakes" said Rieker who grew up four miles from the Lehigh campus "I started calling more audibles and picking up when they were in zone or man-to-man Nine of Rieker's completions were to Steve Kreider who gained 134 yards and scored two touchdowns the second on a diving catch in the back of the end zone Kreider put up Lehigh's first points when he turned the wrong way on a pass pattern then spun around and caught a pitch from Rieker behind a Davidson defender in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown with 13:17 left in the first half The stunting gambling Wildcat defense kept Lehigh off the scoreboard the rest of the half twice recovering fumbles which blunted En gineer drives But Davidson could never generate a consistent offense The Wildcats penetrated to the Lehigh 21 after Wildcat linebacker Cliff Hester recovered a fumble at the Lehigh 29 But Lehigh's Pete Fenton broke up a Bob McCarthy to Joel Golmont pass on third down and Pete Leg ler was stopped a yard short on fourth down after the Wildcats decided against attempting a 39-yard field goal Lehigh drove to a first down at the Davidson four-yard line late in the first half On second down from the three Lehigh halfback Dave Aprill who gained 111 yards in 15 carries and caught two passes for 87 more had the ball jolted away from him by Davidson safety Landis Wade who pounced on the fumble to prevent an almost certain Lehign score 1 I -1 I lik f- pr 8 7 r7: -A i 'Is there was a quick follow-up touchdown This time Junior linebacker Bill King accounted for the second six-pointer With Navy's Bob Leszozynski throwing from shotgun formation King intercepted over the the 30-yard line the white tops of the hats of the Naval Acaderny's mini-corps of Midshipmen gleamed as heads hung en masse To lift those heads and almost as a footnote to the game Leszozynski's ''Michigan Bowl" between these two teams who had played the Wolverines out of the No 1 spot in the nation the past two weekends with close losses at Ann Arbor 21-9 for Duke and 14-7 for Navy "Oh yeah"
