to Bucknell 16-0 Saturday on campus at Richardson Field Bucknell got both its touchdowns as a result of fumble recoveries and added a safety on a blocked punt Davidson's defense played well but had to play often "We had no consistency" losing Coach Ed Farrell said "We execute the plays decently but we seldom have a play where somebody doesn't break down" Farrell added speaking in the present tense "We play even if we don't turn the ball over" But it just wasn't even Davidson's "Sominex offense" seemed to he hoping it would literally catch the Bison defense steeping The Wildcat line had problems blocking and the hacks seemed to run in slow motion "It's not a quick-hitting offense" Farrell defended "and it's not supposed to be We have to wait for the trap block to happen and there is a lot of miss-direction But: we had no inside game at all and it's hard to say why until 1 see the films "They handled us by stunting sending linebackers into gaps in the line) But I can't say it's our people We have the skilled people "But we got bad field position early and got conservative and we never got out of it That's not the peoples' fault that's our fault" The Wildcats never got moving Their first first down came late in the opening quarter on a pass from Bob McCarthy to Mike Harris who fumbled The Cats didn't get a first down at all in the third quarter and twice in the period fumbled on their first play of a scries That gave the defense no rest Davidson had a chance to score in the second quarter when Pete Iegler returned a punt 48 yards the longest at the school since ID70 to the Bucknell 28 hut the offense couldn't get a first down and a 29-yard field goal try by Chuck Bobertz was low and outside The Wildcats didn't have another chance until the last four minutes Bison 18 The offense started from such places as its own 20 5 17 7 6 17 20 25 enough to keep play conservative But there was also Lee Wilder's interception with 1:40 left in the first half that put the Cats at their own 48 The offense from there: three running plays and a punt A Bucknell punt pinned Davidson at its own six with 4:39 remaining in the first half and on the first play Legler fumbled Bison tackle Tom Krueger recovering That set up the first touchdown a five-yard run by Allen Simmons on third down (proof the defense led by Chris Crosby and Paul Andrews was doing its part) Krueger also recovered a fumble at the 20 late in the third quarter to set up the other touchdown Quarterback Kerry Snow who completed 14 passes for 139 yards threw to Larry Brunt lor 27 yards then Dave Devonshuk bulled over from the one The safely came in the first minute of the fourth quarter when Paul Sant 'Ambrogio blocked a punt then tackled punter Mark Hooper who had fielded the ball Farrell noted the inconsistency wasn't limited to the offense "Our kicking game is like everything else We had things like a 60-yard punt we downed on their one but then we go and get one IlllMiMjllll practices all week" in preparing for the game The Deacon defense which allowed an average of 23 points in its first three contests didn't overwhelm the Kansas Slate offense The Wildcats sid managed 229 yards in total offense only five short of the Wake Forest total figure But more important the Deacons stifled any sustained Wildcat scoring drive Since that last shutout in 19f6 Wake had played 13 games Mills wasn't interested in statistics however "It's a good game as long as we won" he said 8P JR(WWn mill rfJ'L'WIUfiMiJHBpvr wirt 1 1 imm mm i mtkm Lube and Oil Change Continued From Page ID State penalties The Wildcats were penalized seven times for 77 yards and the Dears' four penalties set I hem back 20 yards "It's always nice to win in the Hi t'jht" Mills said cracking a smile lor the first time after the game He said Wake forest's lack of turnovers the team fumbled once and threw no interceptions enhanced the Deacons' consistency on offense "This is the first game we've showed poise" Mills said "We played with maturity" McGlamry a blond 6-fuol junior from Columbus da said the rain which let up shortly after the two teams took the field could have spoiled the Wake Forest game plan "We were afraid it was gonna rain hard" he said from the jubilant Wake Forest locker room "We figured we couldn't run right at 'em we had to rely on the pass and the outside gainer" Once the rain stopped however lie Deacons began to dominate the contest A Hi-play drive in the second quarter set up Hely's first field goal The drive was assisted when the Wildcats were called for pass interference a penalty thai moved the ball from the Wake Forest 41 to the Wildcat 46 lust heforc the half ended Wake Forest put together a 15-play drive which set up Hely's second field goal with 3:42 remaining That drive was aided by defensive holding and personal foul calls against K-Stalc The lone touchdown drive began with less than seven minutes left in the game the impetus coming from a 21 -yard pass from McGlamry to split end Bill Millner that moved the Deacons to the K-State 12 The drive which began on the K-Statc 32 after a fumble culminated in the touchdown three plays later Mc-Dougald broke away from two tack-lers and scampered the seven yards for the score with 3:21 remaining Mills thought last week's 27-24 loss to Vanderbilt would he a factor in the team's attitude "Last week was heartbreaking" he said "For us we had never come back to win I thought we might have been a little down" Wake Forest safety Bill Armstrong said the team "was all fired i ii i 'Tnr lWe
