BOB QUINCY Observer Sports Writer The Red Raiders of Colgate making capital use of the friendly skies of Davidson College jumped to an early lead Saturday and outlasted the Wildcats 17-7 to extend their record to 2-0 It was the football opener for the Cats and marked the sixth straight season they have suffered a first-game setback Davidson either had a bad afternoon in looking at aerials or else quarterback Bob Relph is destined to become the next Johnny Unitas Re lph a six-foot 170-pounder from Black River NY connected on 12 of 15 attempts for 163 yards and it was the overhead route which set up both of the winners' touchdowns "I think we dominated the game throughout but we hurt ourselves with penalties and turnovers" said Fred Dunlap the Colgate coach "Defensively we playediremendous football" Colgate's defense held the Davidson attack at Richardson Field to 83 yards rushing normally an average clay for one good back and 81 yards passing Yet the Wildcats stayed within range of the more powerful visitors until the late moments of the game "One thing that hurt was that we never had a drive" noted Coach Ed Farrell of the 'Cats: The beefier Raider defense swamped Davidson runners and the passing game was never a factor Farrell added: "I think if we could have gotten ahead when it was 10-7 (Colgate held a 10-0 lead at the half) we could have put a lot more pressure On them" Midway in the first period Colgate got on the board with a 44- yard field goal when linebacker Ken Ebeling crashed through to :1 01-erver Photo by STEVE PERILLE Is That Football the first quarter Neither team could score in the second period but the play of the day was credited to Davidson's Legler when he probably saved a touchdown with some frantic running following a bad pass from center Center Dave Donaldson snapped the ball from the Davidson 34 back to the five where Leg ler scooped it and began dodging tacklers He hauled it back to the 35 a 30 yard run which actually gained only one yard and conveniently had has face mask yanked by one of the enemy It placed the ball at the 50 first and ten for the 'Cats Mike Peskosky a junior defensive end who has been a touchdown Chuck Bohertz converted for the 'Cats to pull them within three 10-7 It was here that Davidson plight have made some history of its own had it been able to mount an offense but it couldn't
