First Floor News Building 600 Tryon Bob Myers Column 4 PLUGS FREE WITH TUNE-UP 10-8 But Smith has said repeatedly he want to operate the speedway What I believe him to want most is the recognition of the fact that he is boss in command in control calling the shots with others carrying them out This fact now is undisputed Different Types IT IS EASY TO see why Smith and Howard have been in conflict Smith wants CMS run as a big corporation He wants to spend money to make the speedway a showplace to make it the Indianapolis of stock car racing to make the World 600 first not second in riches and prestige to the Daytona 500 to make the speedway a greater part of Charlotte and the country for that matter Smith demands class Smith is affluent and shows it Howard is simply a good country boy who started out with nothing and parlayed small furniture stores bowling lanes car washes and ham houses into a small fortune much smaller than though he is a millionaire He mixes well with people in racing approach to spending money is conservative though his philosophy in operating the speedway is spending money to make it No one can dispute he has done the job well in his own folksy manner From a token stockholder he rose to the top during a period when the speedway teetered on the brink of oblivion He has become one of the most powerful promoters in the business and a virtual Barnuin at the speedway Howard does not need CMS But he loves it Tears well in his eyes everytime he sits behind that big desk in his office and about There is room for Howard and Smith at Charlotte Motor Speedway I know any one who can fill that big chair with any more knowledge capacity efficiency and rapport with those he deals than Howard Perhaps Bruton Smith does Anyway his move ration in January He has amassed nearly 800000 of the 1884723 outstanding shares of stock It is reported reliably that Howard himself has divested himself of his 50000 shares and sold them to Smith Howard will only say that he has the option to sell to Smith Its is my understanding this transaction took place last July 23 The return of Smith a Concord native to the helm is the culmination of an obsession since he forced while trying to save from bankruptcy the speedway he and Curtis Turner co-founded in 1959 Smith claims he was kicked out by a groupwhose sole interest was getting its hands into a pie with a money-making future and that he absorbed the blame for the failure at great cost to his personal and business integrity Having made millions in the automobile business (with dealerships in Rockford 111 where he resides and Houston and Charlotte) as well as in other ventures Smith has returned with something of a vengeance Where all this leaves Howard is not clear because Smith will not say whether he wants to get rid of Howard or whether he wants him to remain to participate in big plans Smith has for the track And precisely where Wheeler fits into the picture is not clear He is no stranger to racing and how it works having served as field manager for racing division in the past Wheeler said just last week however that he firmly believes Smith with his ideas and money Howard with his tremendous knowledge and capacity in racing and himself can exist as a team capable of attaining the unlimited potential they all see in the speedway I agree And somewhere inside I believe Bruton Smith does too It is however solely up to Smith now He has put down all opposition His dream has materialized Watson Leading NC Open Golf GASTONIA ip Roger Watson head pro at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary held a five-stroke lead going into second round of the $15000 North Carolina Open golf tournament four-under-par 68 was the only sub-par round in the field of nearly 180 golfers from across the state Watson opened with three consecutive birdies and added two more later for a first-round 33-35 over the 6732 Gaston Country Club course Eight players were tied at 73 They were amateur BI1 Harvey of Jamestown Sam Adams of Boone George Smith of Havelock Bill Clemmer of Gastonia Sherrill Austin of Hickory Sam Brewer of Raleigh Johnny Craven of Winston-Salem and Dean Sigmon of Taylorsville The field will be reduced to the low 90 players after round N-9-29 I.
