Will Harry and Phil instead turn to the Mafia for the loan and suffer an equally ruinous loan-shark interest rate and the possibility of mob violence? Or the two businessmen simply take their medicine and face the audit the criminal charges the personal and financial ruin? Miami Florida 33132 Strolling violins Flamenco dancers In this setting comes The a tense occasionally melodramatic but always well acted and directed film that deals with so many controversial subjects so well so clearly and so honestly that only days fi after seeing the picture do we realize just how much The has to say From the Los Angeles matter-of-fact report on smog that will keep schoolchildren indoors yet another today to the irritable people on the street parking lot attendant the taxicab driver we realize that the film is not about the collapse of one dressmaking company but rather the collapse of one society and an entire way of life Our own MUCH OF WHAT The has to say is remarkably understated with the brutal commentary only implied in the ordeal suffered by Harry who is played almost miraculously by Jack Lemmon It only needs to be implied however for in concentrating his attention and the thrust and energy in one character and in having a superior actor of great intelligence and depth to carry it out Director John Avildsen has produced another suspensefui minor classic on American life filmgoers will recall was Avildsen first major work Perhaps the most important quality of The is the manner in which the protagonist a man who pimps for his clients who is willing to commit one felony to cover another a man who has no real goal in life hut his own collection of factories emerges as a very real vulnerable and sympathetic character FEW OF LIS have mansions in Beverly Hills but every viewer of The will want somehow to see the tiger that once was Harry Stoner brought back to life Part of our ability to believe arid thus relate to Harry has to do with the writing of the film and little situations like the one in which the cab driver complains about a small tip but too proudly refuses a larger one We all suffer these annoyances and they are not nearly as one-sided us we might think But mainly it is the chemistry between Lemmon the actor and Avildsen the director that makes The work so well In the hands ot other accomplished craftsmen I can see The becoming a hopelessly affected film another one of these sermonizing and self-indulgent films where the speech making gets in the way of everything else CURIOUSLY a second Jack Lemmon film has opened in Miami theaters at (he very same time as The even though the other him A vai i i was made nearly a year earlier Still there are qualities the two pictures share Both are dominated by Lemmon and in both films Lemmon is quite good The two films also offer the sharply identifiable signature of their directors and in both cases the director is a strong one who gives the picture an unusual and almost peculiar feel like The is many things: It is a love story not only of Lemmon and Juliet Mills (who plays an English girl) but also of two off-screen characters in the form of Lemmon's father and Ms mother both dead who bad a long affair in Italy that went undetected by the two families Lemmon as the irritable tough arrogant American and Ms Mills as Ihe quiet refined decent Pamela Piggott eventually fall in love and re-experience the affair enjoyed by their parents ''Avanti1' partially because of the ingenuity of the story partially because Lemmon and Ms Mills give excellent perfbr mantes and partially because Wilder is an old pro who works all of this into a very pretty and spirited Italian setting (the island of Ischia actually) is not only very funny in the Billy Wilder tradition but also endlessly charming 1st floor show at 9 "Flamenco Fantasy 6Jb
