IIH stcrioN County to continue rationing of gasoline able to purchase only 75 percent of the gas it bought a year ago When officials learned last week they had exceeded the county's monthly allotment all county depot tments except public safety agencies were placed on an allocation plan to finish out the month That has forced many departments to cut back on services to the public The Social Services Department has temporarily stopped transporting clients for appointments and the nutrition project for the elderly has cut back on the number of grocery store visits for participants Many county employees are doubling up for rides to common destinations and some work has been postponed until the county receives next month's allocation ounty commissioners have already approved a gas-rationing plan thit allocates gas to certain departments depending on the severity of the problem But that plan which has been on the drawing hoards for quite a while was not ready for last week their sentences trimmed by Gov Jim Hunt they put to rest a nagging issue that otherwise could have dogged Hunt through next re-election campaign The case posed political problems for Hunt similar to those he faced with the Wilmington 10 until he dealt with those defendants in a similar way last year Both were civil rights cases left over from late 1960s and early 1970s racial tension both involved young black men convicted of unlawful burning and both attracted national attention Hunt resolved the issue in the same matter he used for the Wilmington 10 allowing the defendants their parole bv reducing the prison terms Jim Grant and Reddy were released last week as a result the third defendant in the stable-burning case was already paroled roller coaster accident that iniured 12 Philadelphia-area children police say Seven of the young people remained hospitalized Sunday as a result of the accident in which the roller coaster called skipped its track at a small amusement park The passengers on an outing sponsored by several Baptist church groups from Philadelphia were spilled onto the passengnr-loading platform from four cars that derailed as the ride entered its final turn at West Point Park on Saturday authorities said According to Upper Gwynedd Township police the accident occurred when a ride attendant pushed what he thought was a brake as the coaster made its final approach What he actually did was release the brake police said and the cars going too fast left the track front wheels came up on the track Bickett said The train traveled about 700 feet down the track before stopping in a section about 12 feet above ground The 27 passengers aboard were lowered to the ground by a lift on the back of a truck No one was injured but parts of the wooden track were damaged The ride was closed and the state Department of Labor was called to inspect the roller coaster A spokesman for the elevator inspections division which inspects all amusement rides called the malfunction a occurrence and said the possibility of the leaving the track as a result of the incident was remote Following repairs and another inspection the ride was back in operation Saturday
