(AP) Hitch plans to keep Anderson, re-sign Fielder By IIARRY ATKINS AP Sports Writer DETROIT (AP) Mike Hitch took over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday and said his goals include signing Cecil Fielder to a long-term contract, retaining manager Sparky Anderson and bringing back broadcaster Ernie Harwell. Hitch, who on Wednesday completed his purchase of the Tigers from Thomas Monaghan, said he would take at least a year to study whether the team should rebuild Tiger Stadium or move to a new ballpark.

He also said he hoped to bring back former general manager Bill Lajoic, who quit in January 1991. Braggs9 blast keys Reds, 4-3 CINCINNATI (AP) Glenn Braggs hit a three-run homer and Scott Bankhead pitched out of a bases-loaded threat in the seventh inning Wednesday night as the Cincinnati Reds beat Philadelphia, 4-3, for their fourth straight win. The Reds, who trailed Atlanta by seven games last Saturday, have climbed back into the NL West race with their first sweep of the Phillies at Riverfront Stadium since July 1980. The Phillies have lost six straight. Cincinnati built a 4-0 lead around Braggs' second-inning homer, then held on as the Phillies wasted chances early against Tom Bolton (2-2) and then blew their big opportunity against the Reds' bullpen.

Ricky Jordan's RBI single off Norm Charlton and Tom Marsh's sacrifice fly off Bankhead cut it to 4-3 in the seventh. Bankhead walked Juan Bell to load the bases with two out, but got pinch-hitter Ruben Amaro on a called third strike. It was typical of the Phillies' night they got 12 hits but stranded seven runners in scoring position. Rob Dibble pitched the last two innings for his 17th save. Andy Ashby (1-2) gave up five hits and four runs in just four innings to fall to 0-3 in three career appearances against the Reds.

His biggest mistake was a first-pitch fastball that Braggs pulled for his seventh homer, putting the Reds ahead 3-0 in the second. The Reds added a run in the fourth on Joe Oliver's walk, a single by Bill Doran and Bip Roberts' sacrifice fly. The Phillies had seven hits in Bolton's five innings, but just one run on Mariano Duncan's fifth-inning single. Duncan left the game an inning later because of a mild groin strain. Mets 5, Giants 3 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Eric Hillman, making his second start in the majors, allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings as the New York Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants, 5-3, to sweep the three-game series.

Hillman (2-0), who struck out two and walked one, pitched eight scoreless innings against Pittsburgh Aug. 11 in his only other start in the majors. Anthony Young got the final two outs for his ninth save. Young has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive appearances, covering 22 2-3 innings. Giants starter John Burkett (11-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings.

He struck out two and walked one. The Mets scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Bobby Bonilla and Kevin Bass. Tartabull's homer in the fourth inning was his 18th of the season and ninth career grand slam. It made a winner of starter Scott Kamieniecki (4-10) and gave the Yankees their first three-game sweep of the Brewers since 1988. Bruce Ruffin (1-6), who failed to win for the 14th consecutive start, allowed a one-out single to Pat Kelly in the third.

After a fielder's choice, Ruffin walked Randy Velarde and Mel Hall to load the bases before Tartabull hit a 2-2 pitch into the left-field stands for a 4-0 lead. It was Tartabull's second grand slam this season; the other came May 25 against the Brewers. Kamieniecki allowed two runs and four hits, walking three and striking out one in seven innings. Steve Farr worked the ninth for his 21st save. Orioles 6, Angels 4 BALTIMORE (AP) Mike Devereaux and Randy Milligan each hit two of Baltimore's five home runs, and the Orioles ruined John Wathan's final game as the California Angels interim manager with a 6-4 victory.

Milligan and Devereaux hit successive homers off Mike Butcher in a four-run seventh inning, capping a comeback in which the Orioles rallied from a 4-1 deficit. It was the second two-homer game for each this season. Milligan, who had not homered since July 21, hit a solo shot off Julio Valera in the sixth to make it 4-2. After Chris Hoilcs opened the seventh with his first home run since going on the disabled list June 22, Brady Anderson walked and Milligan homered for a 5-4 lead. Devereaux followed with his career-high 21st homer, his third in two games.

Butcher (2-1) had given up only one homer in 22 innings this season. Wathan took over for Buck Rodgers May 22, one day after the team bus crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike on the way to Baltimore from New York. Rodgers, the most seriously injured in the accident, is scheduled to return Friday. Wathan, who was 36-49 as interim manager, will become the bench coach. Wathan closed his stint the same way he started by losing two of three to the Orioles.

"The game just never gets out of your blood," Hitch said during a news conference on the infield at Tiger Stadium. "You know when you leave that you're never going to have that same feeling again." Hitch, who also owns Arena Football's Detroit Drive and the Fox Theatre complex in downtown Detroit, said he wasn't sure of his position on the power struggle between commissioner Fay Vincent and a group of disenchanted owners.

"I don't know the issues well enough to know," he said. "I just really haven't formed an opinion." Hitch said he might restructure some of the front-office jobs. (AP) -Linebacker Charles Haley, a spectacular defensive playmaker who was unhappy with the San Francisco management, was traded Wednesday by the 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys for a series of conditional draft picks. The pass-rushing specialist tied for the team lead in sacks last season with seven.
