THE CHARLOTTE Sot Feb 16 1974 Ute (SjUumnss MCuu vbQitQ StRong Dinah Crosses The Musical Lines woman who has lost sight of the fact she is Martin Block a disc jockey some years later railed me Dinah because he remember Frances Rose So I've been Dinah ever Quite a busy girl host a golf tournament in April and plans an annual tennis wing-ding She likes to cook Her new cookbook just published is In the Kitchen Mhth The someone is herself do things on our morning she said guests show viewers bow to do things They just don't talk about DINAH been Dinah so long most people don't know her name is really Frances Rose Shore had my own 15-minute radio show when I was a sophomore at Vanderbilt she recalled always opened the show with the song and sang this same song when I auditioned for WAYLON JEWINGS (LEFT) AND WILLIE NELSON in Nashville and it definitely sounded Dinah sings at least one song chats with personalities and cooks up all sorts of goodies of interest to all women and most men on her morning show seen Monday through Friday on the NBC network and WSOC-TV "The reaction has been good and frankly I was she said people say I sing enough Well maybe the April special will take care of that been in Hollywood since World War II long enough to lose her Southern accent She has but says she can get it back at the drop of a hat SAY I've never lost it but I don't think such a thing as a Southern accent a Southern inundation And inundation is really what it is An incredible number of singers are coming from the Stic ticked off names like James Brown and the Fisk University Gospel Singers and added guess the reason the South produces so many good singers is that people are good to their Wonder what she meant by that? She didn't elaborate The way Dinah sees it a female TV star a perilous line Being a star and yet not being a dominating woman as to walk on eggs There is nothing less atltactive than a By EMERY WISTFR News Stall Writer Get this now from someone who should know Dinah Shore tells us no such thing as country music "I'm saying there's no pure country music any says Dinah been singing ever ything from gospel to jazz almost from the day she was born "We have crossed over the line the Nashville sound done it a sound that was way ahead of its And maybe Dinah was a little ahead of her time too as she talked M'hat she was saying was she has a musical special coming out in April a special that will deal with nostalgia and the blending of old sounds and new And being from Nashville you know call it "Dinah M'on't You Please Come shot the show in and around said Dinah and no I think the city is being oversold as a music center You get reputations like that unless you earn them REASON so many artists record in Nashville is simply because they record better there The sound is definitely belter the way they build the studios and arrange the microphones The studios are smaller too recorded my last album DIXAIl SHORE people arc good to their Not Average Mr Nice Guys By PATRICK CARR Register Tribune Syndicate They're a sinister couple with a pair of hairy reputations not quite your average Mr Nice Guys They look more like a couple of first-generation rock rollers who somehow or other never made it into the slick showbiz world of Las Vegas and Johnny Carson and truth of the matter is that such was never their intention They may make you feel uneasy with all that hair and denim on their 40-year-old backs but when Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson start playing their music you just have to forget all the talk aliout and and suchlike They're too good for questions of lifestyle to matter There's a natural affinity between die two both from Texas they have the same manager they're about the same age they share an approach to music and the music life that owes more to blues honky-tonk rock 'n roll and plain old stone country reality than it owes to the world of easy-listening ballads sharp stage suits and teams of accountants Willie and Waylon both have a permanent case of Texas Soul and it shows IN THE LAST YEAH OK SO they have grown closer together performing on the same bill helping each other out on recordings and just hanging out They were together as the leading lights of a congregation of so-called country artists at Dripping Springs then again at Abbot Texas for Willie's musical homecoming party and later for their groundbreaking land most impressive' joint concert during the 1973 Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville And now they've come even closer together over two soon- to-be-released albums First of all Willie's new album And (Atlantic SD 7291' which is a album built around the theme of the breakup of a marriage one side fiom the mm's view tie- other from the All the songs are Willie NcNon onginals Then there's a Waylon album (which probably be released until mid-March at the earliest) which features no less than four of the songs on And And Willie co-produced Waybill's album with Waylon The fact that the two artists arc on different labels (Waylon is wth makes ths somewhat unusual occurrence quite startling It's not at all unusual for Willie's songs to be recorded by other artsts nor is it unusual for Wavlon to record other people's songs Millie was with FiCA untd he switched to Atlantic (a recent entry into the country field' and functioned primarily as a Well-stocked truit pond from winch other RCA artists could diaw prune quality material Willie never sold a lot of albums by himself In fact it quite amazing when you see him perform these does and rcn'ize I hat the guv lias never as an artist in the commercial sense of the term Atlantic is doing its best to remedy that fading Didn't Harass Political Foes Lincoln By IRV KITCiNET (C) 1974 Chicaqo Daily News Service CHICAGO For more than a quarter century we have been devoting a yearly column to a to Abe Lincoln for an i ni a i nary interview in the course of which we would relate bis comments and actions to the problems of the day Abe Lincoln kupcinet in death remains as powerful an influence as when he occupied the White House more than five-score years ago But this anniversary of Lincoln's birth calls for something different a comparison of his with President Historans today are calling the greatest presidential crisis the country has known This may be so But Lincoln experienced a much more grave crisis the survival not one man's The United States of America was rent asunder by the approaching civil war and no President assumed office with the credibility and effectiveness at lower ebb Little rememliered today is the fac-t that in 1360 the prophets of doom felt that the Confederal would win the war and a victory for the South would mean an end to the great American experiment in democracy WITH THE OUTBREAK of civil war in April of 1861 Lin coln resorted (o harsh internal security measures which can be likened to President Watergate methods Spies and detectives were employed to pro-Southern anti-Nortli anti-Negro and defeatist groups The in Lincoln's pre-electronics day consisted of infiltrating the opposition opening their mail and subsidizing informers But there was an essential difference in modus operandi as historian Harold Hyman of Rice University points out in Argosy Magazine Lincoln never allowed his spying apparatus to be used against even the most vociferous political opponents who were numerous And ol' Abe never tried to disassociate himself from any knowledge about or responsibility for bis security methods On the contrary he insisted on being informed of every move and more he insisted on keeping the public informed on what was happening (o discourage other opponents Four glaring contrasts between Abe Lincoln and Richard Nixon emerge in a dudy of their respective security measures Unlike Nixon Abe Lincoln never confused open dissent with lack of patriotism Unlike Nixon Abe Lincoln developed a policy of keeping the press and public informed on all details of the security measures Unlike Nixon Abe Lincoln made sure bis spying apparatus avoided the easy way of which has become a mark of M'atorgate own volition before this committee of the Senate to say that I of my own knowledge know that it is untrue that any of my family holds treasonable communications with the Having attested this he de-parted And the speechless committee dropped all consideration of (he minors that Che wife of (he President was betraying the union Abe Lincoln served one term in the House during which Line he charged President James Polk with not telling the truth about our involvement the Mexican Lincoln introduced a resolution that many toddy say bears another similarity to Watergate Said Lincoln the President answer with facts not with arguments Let him remember be sits where George Washington sat and so remembering let him answer as Washington would answer him attempt no evasion no equivocation But if he cannot or will not do this then I shall be fully convinced that he is deeply conscious of lacing in the wrong" A CHICAGO HOUSEWIFE outraged over the laik of outrage by Americans over whal is happening in their nation today took pen in hand and floured out tier feelings to Newsweek Editors of the magazine were so impressed that her letter appears in the current issue's column The Chicago housewife is Donna Cord 29 and mother of nine -year-old Michelle ABRAHAM LINCOLN unlike Richard Nixon And unlike Nixon Abe Lincoln never permitted the men close to him in the White House to lower themselves to standards below his TIIE SENATE Watergate Committee among other agencies conducting investigations has asked for a meeting with President Nixon which lie has ignored Abe Lincoln faced up to a comparable situation in a far different manner Rumors circulating in Washington at the time hinted that wife Mary was a Southern sympathizer i four of her brothers died fighting for the Confederacy i and might even be a spy A Senate committee hearing these rumors called for a se-c meeting to investigate Mrs Lincoln Abe Lincoln learned of the secret meeting and acted with di patch Uninvited and unheralded lie surprised the committee lie spoke slowly and deliberately Abraham Lincoln President of the United States apear of my WAYLON ON THE OTHER HAND has a record of consistent success as a iceord selling artist and for that reason (and the fact that lies so g-iod' alwavs been a sought- after singer ioi a writers songs Therefore what we have here is a combination of one of the most intelligent songwriting poets in the nation and one of the most revered and sensitive performers And that combination Willie's subtle ironic realism and worldly broken-up baritone macho turns out to be something quite special Apart from all these connections and similarities the albums are quite different Willie's which was produced by Jerry Wexler (it's Ins first country album' in Muscle Shoals Ala is a very we'l conceived complex performance a true concept a Hu mi h'ghliglued by Millie's light but powerful tenor yoc a Is and oodles careful producer's effects.
